Set Gmail in Windows Mail

June 11th, 2007

A few days ago someone asked me how to set up their Gmail account in Windows Mail.

So now, I will post a tutorial for all to see.

First off, you need to open Windows Mail. Close the initial Account setup, we will do that later.

Next, you need to go to gmail.com and login. In the right hand corner, there should be a link saying Settings. Click it.

Go to the Forwarding and Pop tab. Select one of the two options that start with Enable POP. Make sure you Save Changes!

Now go to the Windows Mail window. Under Tools, click Accounts. Click Add. There, the Account setup should start.

Fill it in. Here is the info for the email server setup:

Incoming server type: POP3
Incoming Mail server: pop.gmail.com
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com
Check Outgoing Server requires authentication

When filling in the Internet mail logon, add the @gmail.com at the end of your email address.

You should be back in Accounts. Click the account you just made. (It is usually something like pop.gmail.com)

Click the Properties button.

Go to the Advanced Tab.

Change the outgoing port number to 465 and the incoming port number to 995. Make sure both have This Server requires a Secure Connection checked.

That should be all. If the is anything I left out, please tell me.

Hi. I’ve set up gmail on windows mail and can receive messages but when I try to send I get the following message: The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this problem, go to Help, search for “Troubleshoot Windows Mail”, and read the “I’m having problems sending e-mail” section. If you need help determining the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

When I try to find the ‘im having problems sending email’ in the troubleshoot windows mail I get a blank.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    cathy
