What is Yahoo Answers?

Yahoo answers is a community driven effort to ask questions, and to answer them.

You can ask almost any question, and it will probably be answered by someone out of the millions using it.

All you have to do is have a yahoo account, ask a question, and wait for someone to answer.

Being so simple, it has grown to be one of the best ways to learn something.

Also, if you ask a possible duplicate question, it will show you the question they think is similar.

Free Picture Hosting

May 14th, 2007

Here is a simple list of free picture hosts that you can use to upload your pictures onto.

Nothing fancy, I simply feel unmotivated to write a lengthy post.

Finding a blog host/blogging software is one of the most important things you need to start your blog. A blog host is a website that will host your blog. (It’s self explanatory) Most blogging services allow you to have a free sub-domain or you may choose to host it at your own website. The pros and cons of hosting it at you own site vs a sub-domain are:

Your own website:

Pros

  1. You gain Google PageRank easier
  2. You can change the blog service/software without severely disrupting your blog
  3. Your blog will usually show up higher when searched for (This is a proven fact)
  4. A privately owned domain name is respected much more than a sub-domain

Cons

  1. You have to pay for the domain (If you already have one then this doesn’t really apply)
  2. If you want to change your domain and keep your blog, there may be problems

A sub-domain:

Pros:

  1. Usually free
  2. Often times faster to set up
  3. Easier for beginners

Cons:

  1. You must build up the PageRank (This is a painstakingly slow process)
  2. Changing the blog service/software will probably be extremely difficult
  3. Sub-domains show up lower on searches

Blog services/software:

There are many reputable blog services and software. The most famous are shown here. The ones I have used before have a * beside them.

  1. *Blogger (That’s the one I’m using)- Blogger is good for beginning bloggers and some types of pro-bloggers. Their original software is sometimes accredited for popularizing the blog. Although missing some features, blogger has almost no learning curve at all. Blogger offers a free sub-domain also.
  2. Wordpress- The blogging platform used by most professionals. Requiring a small amount of internet knowledge, Wordpress is best suited for those that are committed to blogging. Wordpress also offers a free sub-domain.
  3. *Livejournal- This is a much more social blogging service. Many features were designed to connect people with friends. They offer journal (for personal things), diary (really personal), or a standard blog. I believe they offer a sub-domain also.
  4. Movable Type- This platform is the one used by many businesses. You must install it on your own web server. Recommended only for the computer savvy, because of complications with installation. MovableType does not offer a sub-domain.

That is just a very brief look at some blogging services. There are many others you can use that will fit your needs as a blogger. Don’t hurry to make you blog, as this will cause very much headache later on.

If you are reading this, then you are probably a blogger, are a blogger, or want to improve as a blogger.

Blogging: What is it?

According to wikipedia, a blog is:
A blog (short for web log) is a website where entries are made and displayed in a reverse chronological order. In simpler terms, a blog is like a journal where the newest posts are shown first.

Why should I blog?

You should blog because you want to! Without a reason, there is no use to blog. Some blog to talk about their life. Others try to bring people together for a goal. Some people even blog as a job! Whatever the goal, there is one purpose to blog. That is to get your message to the world.

What kinds of blogs are there?

There are many different kinds of blogs you can have. The most common blog is a tumbleblog, which has short posts and is a mixture of most of the blog types. A videolog, or vlog, is a blog that shows videos. A linklog is a blog that contains links to other websites and blogs. A blog with sketches can be called a sketchblog while one with pictures is called a photoblog. THe type of blog you should have depends on what your topic is.

What do I need to blog?

There are several essential things you need to have. These are: a goal, a message, a blog host, belief in yourself, and readers. Your goal and your message go hand in hand. The goal is to get your message out, no matter what it is. A blog host is a website or server that is able to host your blog for you. Several good blog hosts will be told in Part 2. You need belief in yourself, because if you post halfheartedly, then you will not accomplish anything. The last, and most important thing you need is readers. Readers are the essential part of your blog and they keep the blog alive. Without readers, a blog is worthless.

Prox.y

May 10th, 2007

Today I got some weird comment about pro.xies, so I have decided to create a tutorial about pro.xies.

Just so you know, there shouldn’t be a dot between the o and the x, but some programs filter the word pro.xy

Anyways, pro.xies allow you to anonymously surf the net (or bypass filtering systems). There is a server in between you and the destination so your history cannot be tracked.

So here is how to use a pro.xy:

Either go to my Firefox pro.xy tutorial (harder) or you can listen to this tutorial (easier)

1. Go to a pro.xy website such as freebrowser.info

2. Enter in the website address

3. You have a pro.xified website! (or bypassed the system)

As a continuation of Hide/Show files in Windows Xp and Show Hidden files and folders in Mac OS Finder, I will explain how to show/hide hidden files and folders in Windows Vista.

Essentially, you show and hide the same way, but just use different steps.

1. Click the round blue Start thing in the left corner
2. Click Control Panel
3. Click Folder Options
4. Click the View tab
5. Click Show hidden files and folders
6. Click OK
7. To Hide, just do the same thing but click hide hidden files and folders.

There! Now you can easily hide and show hidden files/folders.

A proxy is an effective way of anonymously browsing the internet.

They work by processing the web page through a server and display the page on your computer.

It is a semi effective way of having privacy while surfing the net.

1. Get the ip address of a proxy and its port number. The ip address is the series of numbers before the colon (keep the dots).

The port number is the number after the colon.

So if 128.208.4.197:3128 was the number in the list, 128.208.4.197 would be the ip. 3128 would be the port number.

2. Open Firefox. Click on the tools menu.Click “Options”. Go to the advanced section.Click on the network tab. Click on the Settings button.Select manual proxy configuration.Enter in the proxy ip and the port number.

3. Click Ok and enjoy your free proxy server!

Almost all of us watch movies on youtube or a similar site.
You have your favorites that you watch all the time, and you have to go on the Youtube site every time you want to watch it.

For a very long period of time, there have been methods of downloading videos from Youtube.

Some were complicated, but I have found one of the easiest ways to download videos.

All you have to do is install the Firefox addon.

Then, there will be a new button next to the address bar.

When you want to download the video, all you have to do is go to the video page and click the new button. Then, click the link and download the video.

Note: You just have to add the extension .flv to the end of the file name.

Thats it! Enjoy your video!

Here is a direct link to the Firefox addon:

FLV Video Downloader

Scan the file if you wish.

This is the video from which I learned how to clone people in Adobe AfterEffects. Therapix is a very detailed teacher and you can learn easily if you know the basics.

I don’t like taking up too much space for a video so I made a link =)

If you want to try it out, you need Adobe AfterEffects or something similar. You can download a 30 day trial at the Adobe website.

Here is a quick tutorial. Ok, first you need a mouse with a scroll wheel and a working keyboard. Ok. In the browser hold the ctrl key. While holding the control key, scroll up or down to increase / decrease the size. That was fast.
