If you don’t like Vista randomly restarting for updates, change the settings for Windows Update.

Go to the Control Panel.

Under system and maintenance, you should click Windows Update.

To the left, there should be an option called Change Settings.

You should choose “Download updates but let me choose whether to install them”

Or

“Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them” to continue getting updates, but not restart randomly.

Maximize Desktop Space

June 18th, 2007

If you are running out of desktop space, here are some tips to clean it up.

1. Remove the icons of programs you don’t use. If you don’t use it, don’t have it scattered all over your desktop. And if you may need it later, put it in a folder.

2. Reduce the size of the icons. By custom sizing the icons, you can make them go as small as possible.

3. Don’t download to the desktop. Instead, create a folder on the desktop saying Downloads. This makes the files easy to access while not taking up precious space.

This is a screenshot of my desktop:

See how tiny the icons are!

Agloco

June 18th, 2007

I was searching the internet when I found Agloco.

It is a company where the users rule. Agloco means a global community and that is what it is. What kind of company is it?

This is their viewbar

Agloco is sort of an advertising company. If you sign up and install their viewbar, they will pay you monthly just by having it OPEN!

It isn’t spyware. I’ve scanned it countless times and it has come clean.

Their viewbar has an ad in it, and that is how they make money. They sell the adspace, and when you have the viewbar with the ad open, they will pay you every month.

Agloco is a rapidly growing company with more and more users everyday. Who wouldn’t like money?

Come to think of it, famous blogger StevePavlina uses it too. Also, you don’t need to click on the ads to make money, just have it open.

PC World has a very interesting article on speeding up your computer by tweaking its virtual memory.

I have yet to try it on my laptop, but as soon as I do, I’ll report the results.

The Mac OS X Leopard background released looks alot like the ones in Vista beta.

This has led to some trying to start a “Cupertino, start your photocopiers” campaign.

Download the background here.

Recycle Bin/Delete

June 15th, 2007

You can change the maximum size of the recycle bin and whether or not you want deleted files to go there.

Right click the recycle bin
Click Properties

There, you change its max size.

Or, if you want files to automatically be deleted and not go to the recycle bin, click the circle beside it. (Called a radio button for those that don’t know)

For those that want to make Windows programs, Microsoft does give you a set of tools to work with. It is called Visual Studio. (I prefer Visual Basic .NET out of them all. It is the easiest to learn and for me, it makes the most sense.) Best of all, it’s free!

Free text messages

June 14th, 2007

Many probably already know this, but you can send free text messages on your computer using txtdrop.com.

And with Vista, you can get a gadget that uses txtdrop to send messages, meaning you are freed from going to that same page over and over again.

All you have to do is open your sidebar!

Opening a recently closed tab is really easy in Firefox.

1. In the menu, select history.

2. When the options drop down, there should be one saying “Recently closed tabs”

3. Click on the tab you want

There, an easy tut for an easy task.

Is your computer slow after years by use? Backup your data and reformat, for a fresh start.
