Set Gmail in Windows Mail

June 11th, 2007

A few days ago someone asked me how to set up their Gmail account in Windows Mail.

So now, I will post a tutorial for all to see.

First off, you need to open Windows Mail. Close the initial Account setup, we will do that later.

Next, you need to go to gmail.com and login. In the right hand corner, there should be a link saying Settings. Click it.

Go to the Forwarding and Pop tab. Select one of the two options that start with Enable POP. Make sure you Save Changes!

Now go to the Windows Mail window. Under Tools, click Accounts. Click Add. There, the Account setup should start.

Fill it in. Here is the info for the email server setup:

Incoming server type: POP3
Incoming Mail server: pop.gmail.com
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com
Check Outgoing Server requires authentication

When filling in the Internet mail logon, add the @gmail.com at the end of your email address.

You should be back in Accounts. Click the account you just made. (It is usually something like pop.gmail.com)

Click the Properties button.

Go to the Advanced Tab.

Change the outgoing port number to 465 and the incoming port number to 995. Make sure both have This Server requires a Secure Connection checked.

That should be all. If the is anything I left out, please tell me.

Turn off startup programs. It will save time in the end.

If you are an administrator, and there are other users that are too *untrustworthy* to enter some files, you can easily change the permission settings for users.

Here are the steps to change the permissions:

1. Select the folder or file
2. Right Click
3. Choose “Properties”
4. Under the security tab, you may edit the user permissions to modify, read/execute, write, and more.

Defragmenting your PC can slightly increase performance. (Don’t use the one that comes with the OS. Use something like PowerDefragmenter)

Vista Sidebar

June 7th, 2007

One of Vista’s features is the sidebar.

This will allow you to put gadgets onto your desktop.

Gadgets can range from sticky notes to many other things.

The purpose of this quick tutorial is to show you how to use this cool feature.

First thing you need to know is how to open the sidebar properties. This will help in the other tutorials.

1. Open Windows Sidebar properties by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button clicking , clicking Control Panel, Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Windows Sidebar Properties.

1. Open Sidebar-
Open Windows Sidebar by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, and then clicking Windows Sidebar.

2. In the sidebar properties, the are many options you can use to customize your sidebar experience.

If you want to make sure no other windows cover the sidebar, check the box saying “Sidebar is always on top of other windows”

And if you want it to activate sidebar during startup, check the box “Start Sidebar when Vista starts”

Anyone with at least 5 IQ should be able to figure the other stuff on the properties page.

Now for some specific tricks you can do with Sidebar

1. Keep your gadgets but close the sidebar-

Okay, to do this, just drag all of your gadgets out onto the desktop. Now, right click the sidebar and click “Close the Sidebar”

2. Install Gadgets-

Right click the Sidebar icon on the taskbar. Select Add gadgets to sidebar and get your gadgets.

3. Convert widgets to gadgets-

Do you have that really useful widget from Google, PicGames, SpringWidgets, Grazr, or You Tube that you want in Vista?

Use Amnesty Generator and be happy with your new gadgets! (Go here for more info on Amnesty)

Hopefully, after having experience using sidebar, you will discover even cooler things you can do with Vista Sidebar.
