Tabbed File Explorer
Saturday, December 9, 2006
I just found a really useful freeware utility, a tabbed file explorer! As a dedicated tab user in Firefox, I have always disliked windows explorer - too many windows open all the time. I dislike most of the explorer replacements because they have 14,209 options… I just want something nice and simple if I’m going to bother using a GUI at all. (and you should use the command line too)
It’s fairly customizable as well, although it could use a list view.
I have a hotkey utility that launches folders at the press of a key… and with this utility you can pass the name of the folder on the command line, which will then open the folder in a new tab.
If you know of a better utility, let me know.

A long time user of Firefox myself, I found xplorer2 to suit my preference for tabbed browsing. I particularly like its additional feature of being able to have two complete folder windows showing side by side.

Total Commander also offers tabbed file browsing. It’s lightweight (installer size is 1.6 MB) and very powerful, as it’s also a full replacement for WinZip and a full FTP client.
OK, the default settings of Total Commander 6 are weird. I changed many of them.
