  • Diagnostics & disk scans

    March 18th, 2007 by professoripod

Just posting some more cool iPod tricks you might like to test and play around with :)

Put your iPod into diagnostics mode
    - Reset your iPod.

    - Once you see the apple, quickly hold the Select and Left button down until the menu comes up.

Run a Disk Scan on your iPod
    - Reset your iPod.

    - When your iPod displays the Apple logo, hold down the Previous/Next/Select/Menu button for a few seconds.

    - Wait 10-30 minutes for your iPod to finish scanning.

    - Check what icon your iPod displays when finished:
    - A “check mark” means the disk is fine.
    - An “exclamation mark” means the disk scan failed.
    - An “arrow” means the scan fixed some problems it found.

    - Press the Play button to exit.

Done and done. And I mean done.

    Is your iPod abnormally slow?

    March 17th, 2007 by professoripod

    Well, aren’t you lucky…

This is usually a sign that your iPod needs a software update. Simply run the iPod Updater. If this is not the case, remove all music on your iPod and re-sync it. If the problem persists, your iPod needs repair.

    Record on your iPod

    March 17th, 2007 by professoripod

Something for the advanced users :P

    - Download & install “PodZilla” onto your computer.

    - Boot in to Linux on your iPod.

    - Go to Extras > Recordings.

    - Choose either 8, 32, 44.1, 88.2 or 96kHz

    - Record in a microphone.

    - Boot back in to the normal iPod OS plug in to the doc.

    - Grab your files from the iPod in the “Recordings” folder.

Presto. I’ve never needed to use this trick, but those who disliked the iPod for the fact that it had no recording device can now do it.

    The value of an iPod

    March 16th, 2007 by professoripod

Do you buy/sell iPods? If so, the information I am about to present will be very useful to you. If you don’t, it will still be useful :P

What I am about to show you conveys the value of an iPod ($) over a 4 year period. This study was taken off eBay, so it will be relevant when purchasing/selling on the popular auction site.

    Brand New 100%
    6 Months 77%
    1 Year 63%
    2 Years 45%
    3 Years 29%
    4 Years 19%

Of course, they are not exact figures, but they should give you an estimate/idea of what you can expect.

Is your iPod making strange noises?

    March 16th, 2007 by professoripod

    Well, is it?

We are talking about a loud, clicking noise.

This indicates hard drive trouble, which probably came from a drop, shake, or random part failure. The only solution here would be to replace the iPod hard disk. Your warranty should cover this.

    :)

    Enable iPod Screensaver

    March 14th, 2007 by professoripod

Guys, this is only compatible with the video iPod. And remember that by doing this, any customized settings will be reset. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

    - Create a new folder named “Demo Mode” on your iPod.

    - Rename any video file as “Demo” in iTunes.

    - Keep the iPod in a charger and not playing, or paused.

    - Within 2 minutes, the video you renamed as “Demo” will automatically play and repeat.

So, who wants a video iPod now? lol.

    Always keep your iPod happy

    March 14th, 2007 by professoripod

Taking care of your iPod ensures it won’t die on you unexpectedly and live for a long time to come.

Don’t disconnect at the wrong time.
Always wait until your iPod displays the “OK to disconnect” message before disconnecting it from the FireWire cable. The danger here is that you may interrupt data transfer and corrupt one or more files as a result.

    Handle with care.
The iPod was built to be tough, but it will not handle more than a few falls before saying goodbye forever. The best thing you can do is buy a protective case from your local Apple store or online.

Keep away from fire & water.
In other words, keep it away from extreme heat or cold. If you find your iPod in such a situation, don’t turn it on. Let it settle back to its normal temperature before attempting to see if it still works.

After all, don’t we care for the things we love? :)
