i am a desktop user.  period.  … or am i?

i started my computing history of course with desktops since well they were more accessible than the early portables (ie uber crazy prices for the times for the early laptops).  the apple IIe to the powerpc to a packard-bell 75mhz to my first computer/laptop toshiba 133mhz.  i then built my first desktop system, an AMD Slot A, 900mhz Athlon and about 20+ more systems.

anywho, davak’s recent blogs about helping his dad find a new computer has me really rethinking my setup.  currently i run a rather older (well imo older, Athlon 64 x2 cpu, socket 939; 2gb ddr1, 1.5+TBs of space) desktop which really needs to be updated if not replaced all together.  i also have an even older Athlon 64 htpc setup that just sits and collects dust but yet would not be worth even trying to sell.

so what do i do?

davak posted a nice follow up on this, desktop vs laptop, which really got me thinking.

i know that if i go with a more powerful laptop i won’t just toss my current desktop setup in the trash or sell it for pennies on ebay.  as a computer user, i’ve definetely come of age recently ie am ’starting to get old’, hehe or so it seems.  work has become a bit more demanding and having a more portable solutions seems more viable.  however when i am at home though i do want to still be able to do the more powerful things i do normally with my desktop such as rendering 720p video i’ve created or just sd video rendering or basic web server/file server features.

also as a side note, i saw the best buy deal this last weekend for a toshiba a205-s5825 laptop for a mere $450 and got one and am so far pretty impressed with it for the price.  so the price of a decent new laptop (non mac one that is) is within the 1000us dollars range, imo.  a decent desktop would prob cost me around the same price if i built new from scratch and did not reuse parts (which i prob would not).  yes, the desktop would by default be more powerful but i really do not plan to game on my pc. my main uses these days are hd content, video, music, productivity (office), photoshop, web work.

so.. what do i do?  hmmm… to be continued….

Seamonk:

I would certainly suggest a laptop for you. I gain a ton of productivity out of my macbookpro. In fact, I am sitting at City Beverage nursing an adult beverage and some free wifi right now.

I will probably always have a tower system too, but if I had to give up one of the other, the desktop would the first to die.

With my dad, it is complicated. (Thanks for the link love to my blog series.) He’s neither a mega-geek nor requires mega portability. Anyway, think you are confused now… wait until I do my mac versus XP/Vista post. ;)

Let us know what you decide.

Well i still thing a desktop pc is the best.
I m not a gamer myself but after trying the two sides of the coin i still fall the the desktop choice.
The things that make me still love the desktop:

- One of the things that kills my joy is the lack of hard drive space on laptops and as an addicted to downloads, photoshop, customization, my own dvdrips, subs creation, css, blog, notes, software, multi boots, wmware,… it makes my life harder in a laptop! And external hard drives aren’t a solution because in my six month try in a laptop i already were using two 500gb external cases that kills all the “portable” word of a laptop.
- the other thing is the work vs leisure time. With the laptop i started to bring more work into my life.
In the coffee, laptop;
In the library, laptop;
In the weekend outside, laptop again;
It was always in my backpack.
And it was always in my life.
- multitasking is another one. My “ex” laptop was a dual core, 4gb ram etc but even with that it was still laking the good old performance of desktop pc. Even more, it was strange to me seeing that my laptop with wmware, photoshop,firefox with 20+ tabs was already putting all is cooling at is maximum. And because of that it was killing completely the battery ( i did some tweaks but it was the same). Do i need to do less multitasking because of the battery… i didn’t want to change my habits because of a lack of power and long period work time hot problem.
- multi storage places. So lets see i have a “old pc”, a laptop, a media pc (in my living room), and a router to share the internet/Lan. And the problem is the sync of all my work. Today i make a post in my blog in my laptop, tomorrow i work in a autocad (noob) project in my pc and with time i start to divide my work. I tried file sync programs and they worked but why do i need multi platforms? what is too much?
- video performance, many say why good graphic cards? Its only for gamers. But thats not it. It realy helps in the video playing performance. One of the thing i did hate in my laptop was that when my friends send to me movies in 1080p MKVs of 4.5gb, my laptop didn’t have the “juice”. If i start the movie and play it normally there was no problem but when i star jumping from place to place it was dam anoing the need to wait 5 seconds in each jump. Even more because i need to see if the subtitles are right in the precise time.
- keyboard, its stupid but i love the normal keyboard.
- USB`s - two pens, two external hard drives, headsets, web cam, printer… i find it hard to maintain so much in so less usbs… here come the hubs.
- the size of the screen … no one tell me that 15,4″ is the same as a 19″. A normal 19″ or + size screen is fantastic to work, see movies and multi tasking….

- and many more…. but this is getting big… lol

well in the end i sold my laptop. I have right now a good desktop pc. with no external hard drives, no multitasking problems, good 19″ screen and a backup system for my main data in my router. I love to change and fix my own hardware, and make it last long years.
I found that i am not a laptop user. but i do have a usb-pen with portable software and a good phone and that is all i need.
One more thing you have a great blog here. I started visiting your blog last year… and i still do today!
Sorry my poor english
