Viewing Excel Worksheets Side-by-Side
September 21st, 2006

In Excel, you can work on two worksheets (from two different workbooks) by placing them in vertical, side-by-side windows. When you have two workbooks open at the same time, select Window, Compare Side by Side With. After you select this command, a floating Compare Side by Side toolbar will open in Excel. The toolbar includes the Close Side by Side button, which you can use to close the windows as soon as you’re done comparing or transferring data between the two. While the two workbook windows are in open in Excel, you can select different worksheets and scroll to different regions in either one by using its sheet tabs and scroll bars that appear at the edge of the window. To make workbook active, just click the title bar or one of the cells of its worksheets.

Another way to compare Excel, Word and any other program in multiple windows is to use a great program called WinTiles that has been around for a few years…

Great hint Shaman. Thanks!
Jon-Paul:
I have never seen Win-Tiles although the program appears to me to be just a shareware way to tile windows.
XP already does tiles pretty well already… Just right click on the task-bar and select your tiling options. If you only want to tile certain windows… then just hold CTRL, then select the windows you want to tile, and then select your tile options.
Here is the recipe on the tile of windows:

Hi,
Is there a way to view side by side 2 worksheets that are located in the same workbook?
Thanks,
Mickey

Mickey,
With your workbook open, just select Window, New Window. This will create a second window of the current workbook. Then you can arrange them horizontally/vertically and select individual sheets in each window.

Hello,
If you have two monitors, like I do, you can go to
Tools > Options
Select the “General” tab and place a check mark at “Ignore other Applications”.
You will be able to open Excel files in multiple windows (like Word.

Francois,
Thats what I needed.
Thanks so much.

When I check “ignore other applications” under tools > options > general, I can view an excel file on each of my two monitors. However, now when I try to open up an excel file through window explorer, just a blank excel file is loaded. The program no longer automatically opens the file I’ve selected. Is there a fix to view excel on two monitors and allow opening thorugh the window explorer?
Thanks.

Thanks Nick.
That really made my day too! Comparing Excel sheets side by side, simply by choosing “new Window” was a too obvious solution for me to spot. It is in HELP under “View multiple sheets or workbooks at the same time ” , but for some reason that did not come up when i looked for it.

It might be late. Still somebody might be able to use it. You can share the excel sheets. Tools and then share workbook. There are some limitations, but as long as to work it will work just fine.

Excel 2007 is pathetic. You can have two windows open inside the Excel workspace, but not in Windows. The workbooks appear separately on the taskbar, but they’re not separate windows. What if I want to look at the figures from two workbooks while entering data into a database? I’ve been able to do that for years, and now they’ve killed that basic usability feature. Vista sucks, IE7 sucks, Office 2007 sucks…. whoever makes the UI decisions at Microsoft is driving the company into the ground.

Matt is right.
The biggest annoyance I have with Excel 2007 is the inability to have two separate windows open for the same workbook. Many people these days have two monitors, so why cant I have one tab open in a window on one monitor and another tab from the same book open on the other monitor ?
I know you can drag one window across two monitors and have two views (subwindows) open within that same big window but this works very poorly unless both monitors are the same size and have the same resolution. Even then, switching between the views/subwindows does not work well at all.
The suggested feature should be a very easy tweak for Microsft to do. In Word the feature already exists. If you open two views of the same Word document each view appears in a separate window that can be resized according to each monitor

Like the others, I’m so grateful for that New Windows tip. Now for the stoopid question; how do I now remove the addition windows I’ve created? Although I’ve saved, closed and re-opened my Workbook, all additional windows appear under the Window menu and to be honest I’d prefer just the one at present. I’m using Office 2003 by the way. THX!

HOLD EVERYTHING! Just found that if I click the ‘X’ in the window(s) I do not want to keep (so NOT the huge Red Excel ‘X’) and then Save the file, I’m left with just the single windows worksheet. Sorry for wasting your time. Cheers.

My only real problem with google analytics is that it doesn’t work very well with a lot of ASP pages, which a lot of clients use nowadays. It can also get kind of hairy when trying to get it to understand what a conversion is. Instead of just any click, it needs to be one specific click haha.

These are great tips. Thank you so much!
I have a question to add though. It’s about opening .PNG files that’s hyperlinked in excel. My default program for opening .PNG files is Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. It works perfectly when I open a .PNG file in a file folder. When I click on the hyper link in excel, the .PNG file opens up in IE7. Anyone know how to change this? I’d like the hyperlink to open the picture in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer because I can use the arrow button to scroll to the next file. I am using Office 2003. Hyper link is done with a formula: =hyperlink(”filename.PNG”,filename)
Thank you in advance.
