Making Your T-Mobile Phone Run Opera Mini
November 1st, 2006
Opera Mini is a great little browser for your cell phone. If you’re a T-Mobile user, you will have some problems since Opera Mini wants to access it’s proxy on port 80. T-Mobile’s WAP browser uses port 8080 and Web Sessions are closed on T-Mobile phones. Time for a little hacking to get things moving. First thing you’ll need to do is hop onto Google and download a copy of P2KTools and decompress it. After you have done that, follow these steps:
- Connect your phone to your computer, and as the computer locates the new hardware, direct it to the drv directory in P2KTools for drivers.
- Execute P2KTools.exe.
- Click on the arrow next to Switch To and select P2K Mode.
- Click Connect.
- Select the Seem Editor tab.
- Under the Seem section, look for seem and rec and make sure the seem reads 0032 and rec reads 0001.
- Select Read From Phone.
- Click on byte 2F.
- Under the Bit operations section, under the 1, check the checkbox.
- Select Write To Phone.
- Click Restart to restart your phone.
- On your phone, go to Office Tools and select Web Access.
- Select Web Sessions.
- Create a new web session with the following info:

Set the new web session as your default and open Opera Mini to check if it is connecting to the internet. If your Opera Mini still doesn’t work, go back to the newly created Web Session and select Launch.

nice tip! i love using my Opera Mini on my Sony Z710i hybrid on Tmobile! the formatting and layout is superior most phone’s wap browsers.
i’ve noticed that i’ve always been able to get Opera Mini working on my phones w/Tmo, however i do buy all of my phones outside of tmobile and get them unlocked/debranded. however i do have tmobile samsung phone that i might to try this with!
btw, does google maps/local work w/normal tmobile phones? you can get that by going here w/your phones wap browser, http://www.google.com/gmm

Seamonkey, I agree that Opera Mini is superior to the WAP browser. I use the heck out of it. As far as Google Maps goes, it works fine on my T-Mobile Razr. Thanks for the link, I’m sure I will be using it quite a bit as well.

Will putting this on my phone give me internet access without signing up for Tmo’s web service?

Sometime in the past 30 days, T-Mobile has changed something on their network. (At least in the Mid-Ohio Region) OperaMini 3.0 reports “Connection Closed by Remote Host” after transferring 1k. OperaMini 3.1 doesn’t work at all (it fails the networking tests) –And Google Maps also reports that it can no longer find a “This application requires a Data Connection.”
Does anyone have any information on what has changed?

I was actively using my Motorola V3x (aussie import) on t-mobile in the greater Seattle area on 22 February. At midnight, j2memaps / opera 3.0.1/3.1 and even FPC Benchmarker network tests stopped working, and haven’t worked again since. I even added the t-zones/mobileweb 5.99 service, but it still isn’t working.

I spoke to t-mobile and i was told that they had a leak in their network but found out and installed a security patch, so now in order to run opera mini, t-zones for 5.99 must be active. I did it and now i can surf the web and its actually a little faster than before. Also dont forget to ask tmobile to end you the installation file for t-zones, its updated now.

sorry typo : Also dont forget to ask tmobile to SEND you the installation file for t-zones, its updated now.

I agree with shamanstears when he says I agree that Opera Mini is superior to the WAP browser. I use the heck out of it. As far as Google Maps goes, it works fine on my T-Mobile Razr. […] I use T-Mobile for my cellular service. For a few months, T-Mobile was allowing usage of the Gmail App to be utilized on it’s tzones internet package. Long enough for me to become totally addicted to it. The Gmail App for accessing your Gmail on your cell phone is a supper application. I guess too super, since T-Mobile is now blocking the ports that are required for the application to function. I could use my WAP browser, or better yet, my Opera Mini to access Gmail, but it just wasn’t the same. Then I came across flurry. While it is by no means the Gmail App, it does fine in email access, but it does quite a bit more. It allows you to check multiple email accounts on your phone, imports contacts, acts as a RSS feed reader, sends pictures from your phone, and even can send you a text message when you get new mail. If you’re a T-Mobile user (and even if you’re not), it is definitely worth checking out. Posted by shamanstears Filed in Google, Software, Cell Phones […]

I FINALLY got my t809 flashed to a d820 only to find that OperaMini STILL wouldn’t work on tmobile… BUT, after MUCHO Googling I found that the problem lies in the 8080 port assignment… I changed it to port 9201 and Viola’… IT WORKS… Opera 3.1 finally works!!!
use all the settings listed at the top of this thread except the port # (use 9201) and see if it works for you.

I’ve been trying to install Opera mini on a Verizon LG enV (9900). They’ve got this thing so locked down I can’t get it to load, plus it appears this phone does not support Java. Anybody confirm that there is no way to load Opera onto the enV?

Hi -
Has there been an update yet to allow mini Opera to work with T-Mobile? They offer the best coverage in my area and I was hoping to try mini Opera with it.

Do you have instructions for doing this to a Nokia phone? As far as I can tell the P2K tools work only on Motorola phones.
