A new firmware is available for the Zune device. While it doesn’t seem to add any new functionality, it does improve the performance of the unit. The area where I noticed the most difference is in viewing pictures. When viewing a folder containing a lot of images, the device would lag and give the circles image while it loaded the next picture. That is now gone and the Zune moves smoothly through the directory. To manually update your Zune to the latest firmware:

1. Connect your Zune to your PC.

2. In the Zune software, in the left pane, locate your ZuneTag.

3. Right-click your device and select Check for Zune Device Updates.

The firmware will then be downloaded and installed on your device. The unit will reboot a couple of times, make sure to not unplug it until the installation is complete.

It’s sad that Microsoft has not moved quickly to firmware fix some of the initial complaints.

Seems like some new bell or whistle would be a good PR move.

I think they are pushing for a big 1st quarter. They will probably pump out something good with the Zune after the public launches of Office 2007 and Vista. I agree with you though, it would have been great PR. They should have consulted us on it. :)

Does anybody know how the Zune is selling, meaning if it is meeting MSFT’s goals or anticipations? I just checked at Amazon and in the top sellers in electronics, 7 of the top 20 were iPods (including the #1) and one more was an iTunes gift card. A Zune didn’t show up until #56. That might be better than expected.. just not sure.

i’m curious on how the zune is selling too. wait; an article by my local town paper Pioneer Press:
    http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/business/technology/16263552.htm

i know i’m rooting for the Zune.. Kill those yuppy a## ipods! hehe.. again, my anti-apple sentiments showing their ugly teeth.

i finally figured out why i have that hidden anti-apple feelings. whenever i use any of their machines/products (OS X, Ipod) i feel as if they are almost looking down on my intelligence by how obvious somethings are. for the general public its not a bad thing, but for us geeks.. well… it hurts our lil egos.. heheh..

come on, give me a bsod for no reason, make me think! haha.. so.. does the zune have its own BSOD when i freezes up?

    sorry for the randomness.. :P
been one of those kind of days…

Thanks for the link.. good article. As for your anti-Apple feelings, I can kinda see where you’re coming from — almost the same negativity that the Wii could get because our parents want one (and can use one), too. But any box that comes with bash & vi ready to run, that’s enough to make me feel manly about the 5 hairs on my chest.

Here’s my perspective on hacking: great fun. But there is time to hack and there is time to work. When I need to work, I want a system I can rely on 100% of the time. OS X is that for me. I have a (completely embarrassing) stack of boxes, too, most whirring, with an assortment of real, hackable operating systems on board.. Solaris 11, Ubuntu, Gentoo, and, yes, even a fresh XP (completely out of necessity for testing code for an upcoming and completely cool project).

Here’s a fun hacking site that Johnny found today and shared with me: wiili.org. Their little logo (Tux as Mario) is awesome. I found their reverse engineering of the Wiimote an interesting read (I’ve been wondering how accurate the thing is.. for my own dubious purposes…..) Hmm.. your randomness appears to be contagious.. Zune to OS X to Linux to Wii..  sorry everyone.

hehe.. thats very true about bash and stability (most people don’t have 2 or more pcs at home, w/xp its a question somedays on whether your system will boot, i do tech support allday so i know the pains! hehe)….

hmm.. i guess i got away from bash after not working w/AIX or UNIX anymore. anywho, back on track! anyone going to do the Zune 80GB hd upgrade? i’d be curious to see how that goes, i’ve been eyeing a zune for that fact alone.
