If you have the My Computer (or Computer if you are running Vista) icon on your desktop, you can add the Calculator to the context (Right-Click) menu for much easier access.  You can do this by creating a simple reg file and merging it to the Windows registry, here’s how:

  1. Open up Notepad (or right-click the desktop, mouseover New and select Text Document).
  2. Select and copy the following:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
  3. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\
    CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\Calculator]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\
    {20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\Calculator\command]
    @=”calc.exe”

  4. Paste it into the new text file.
  5. Save the text file and rename it to for example, XP_Calculator_MyComputer_Context.reg.It should look like this:ds_mycomputer_calc3
  6. Right-click the newly created reg file and select Merge.  A prompt will appear verifying that you want to add the information from the reg file to the registry, click Yes.ds_mycomputer_calc4

Didn’t work for me in Vista. A desktop shortcut would work just as well, I suppose.

@geneio Nice catch. I had tried it on XP and Windows Server 2008. Since it worked on 2008, I made the rather poor assumption that it would also work on Vista. I’ll get back to the drawing board to find a Vista solution.

Why not just put a shortcut in the quick launch bar. It is available from any window.
