Once upon a time, in a universe far, far away, I used to be a fitness trainer and bodybuilder. Lifehacker took me back to those days recently with two separate posts on push ups. The first was on the push up belonging in your fitness routine and the other was on a six week training plan to get you doing one hundred push ups. The fact is that the push up is a very effective exercise in strengthening and developing your shoulders, triceps, and chest. If you want to make your push up work out even more effective, you can make some adjustments to better target the muscle group you are wanting to work.

1. Keeping the elbows away from the body - By keeping your elbows away from your body, you can place more focus on the chest (specifically the pectoralis major and pectoralis minor) and reduce the focus on the triceps (the back of the arm). By elevating your feet by placing them on the seat of a chair and keeping the wide hand base you can bring the focus to the upper portion of the chest and begin placing more stress on the anterior deltoid (the front part of your shoulder). Using a narrow hand base (less than shoulder width apart), you can focus on the inner half of the chest, and by using a wide hand base (greater than shoulder width apart) you can focus on the outer half. If your really up to a challenge, use three chairs, one for each hand and one for your feet. Your down position of this push up should finish at below hand level, giving you greater stretch of the chest muscles and requiring you to have to push longer to return to the beginning position.

2. Keeping the elbows close to the body - With the elbows in, you shift the stress from the chest to the triceps (the back of the arm). These can be done from a normal position or if you need a little more resistance, elevate the feet so that your body weight is shifted more towards your arms.

3. Perform push ups from a “handstand” position - With the help of a wall, position yourself into a handstand that will allow you to do the pushup. You want to be as close to parallel with the wall as possible. Doing push ups from this position will place the majority of the stress on the anterior deltoids and the rhomboid and trapezius muscle groups (the upper and middle back).

4. Perform “negative” push ups - If your push ups are starting to get too easy, you can shake things up by doing “negative” push ups. These are performed by resisting gravity as you lower your chest to the floor, moving slowly and steadily until it is time to push back up. The push upward should be performed at regular speed. These can be a real killer, so be ready.

By using these methods for doing your push ups and adding stomach crunches, leg raises and wind sprints to your workout, you can have a full body workout that requires very little resources.

The tiny clues are actually part of the TinyURL address to a page at Amazon, IMDB, Netflix, or Blockbuster that reveals the title of the movie or series. Simply go to your address bar and type in http://www.tinyurl.com/ followed by the letters that make up the “tiny clue”

Back in the early 80's, Kenneth Blanchard and Spencer Johnson authored a great little book called The One Minute Manager which outlined three simple management techniques that helped one become a more effective manager. These same concepts can also help one become a comment master instead of merely posting simplistic, non-productive comments, you could be contributing to the blog post and the productivity of the blog author as well.

Blanchard and Johnson’s management techniques were quite simple in nature:

1. One Minute Goals
2. One Minute Praising
3. One Minute Reprimands

With some minor adjustments, these same techniques are quite useful when commenting on a blog post.

1. One Minute Goals: The goals of the blog post are laid out by the blog author. You can derive these goals from the title of the post and from the first paragraph. You need to assess your ability to contribute in an effective manner. Your goal is to make your commentary useful to the author and to other readers.

2. One Minute Praising: Once you have assessed the goals of the blog post, you should start identifying everything that the author did to meet those goals. Let the author know how the information was useful, do your best to catch him/her doing something right. Praise is very rewarding to the author, adding fuel to write more posts in the future.

3. One Minute Reprimands: We’re not talking about slamming the author, we’re talking about identifying areas where goals of the post were not meant. Add additional information and tell why it is of importance and ask questions about any gaps you find. This gives the author the opportunity to improve his/her post plus it gives them food for thought on their next post. If you disagree with the post, debate the post, don’t make any personal attacks on the author. Debate can be beneficial to both the commenter and the author, helping both refine their position.

By using these techniques, you can write effective and productive commentary that will benefit the author and other readers, plus create an audience of your own. Many readers spend a great deal of time reading the various comments that follow a post.

If you have text in two or more columns that you wish to join (concatenate) in another column, this can be easily done by creating a formula that utilizes the ampersand (&). I have found this to work in Microsoft Excel, OpenOffice’s Calc, and iWork’s Numbers.

For our example, we will use a scenario where a list of users’ first and last names are given to you and your boss wants them to be in a single column instead of two.

You could take the time to copy and paste the names together in a column, but there is a much easier way. We can go to C2 and input the formula: =A2&” “&B2 we would then get the concatenated string of Bob Smith in the new cell.

We could use =B2&”, “&A2 and produce Smith, Bob in the new cell.

Copy the formula to the rest of the cells in the column to concatenate the desired cells.

I recently took a vacation with my family and found that the camera on my cell phone to be of great assistance. Prior to this, I couldn’t think of any productive ways to use my phone’s camera. Here’s what I’ve been using it for:

Parking Space at Airport – Instead of having to write down your parking space number (or worse yet, remember it!), use your camera to take a quick pic of the parking space number and any other markers (floor number, section markers, etc.) that will help you locate your car when you return from your vacation.

Rental Car’s License Plate Number – Most hotels require your vehicle’s license plate number. If you are renting a car, it’s doubtful you know what it is. You can save yourself a trip to the parking lot by taking a quick snapshot before you go into the hotel to register. You should also take pictures of any dents or scratches on the rental car before you leave before you leave the rental agency.

Hotel Room Number – Since hotels are moving away from actual keys and moving towards pass keys and bands to open your door, they don’t imprint the room number on the pass key. If you’re rushing out of your room to get started on your vacation, take a snapshot of the room number so you are sure to find your way back instead of having to ask the front desk where you are staying.

Luggage – Take a picture of your luggage so that if you can’t find it at the airport, you can save time in trying to describe what you are looking for.

You should also take the time to enter the customer service numbers for your credit cards and bank into your phone’s address book. If your wallet is lost or stolen, you will be able to quickly call to guard your accounts. You should also save your health insurance info as well, including the identification and group numbers as well as the customer service phone number.

Google has given you all kinds of things to enhance your Gmail experience in the newly added Gmail Labs. Some are quite useful while others are fun to play with but not very practical.

To enable any of the features of Gmail Labs, login to your Gmail account. Go to the upper-right corner and select Settings. From the Settings menu, select Labs.

You will see a list of features you can enable. The list includes: Quick Links, Superstars, Pictures in chat, Fixed width font, Custom keyboard shortcuts, Mouse gestures, Signature tweaks, Random signature, Custom date formats, Muzzle, Old Snakey, Email Addict, and Hide Unread Counts.

My picks for the best features are as follows:

Quick Links – Adds a box to the left column of your Gmail interface for easy access to any Gmail URL. Simply go to the desired page and then click Add Quick Link in the Quick Link box. You will be prompted to input a name for the Quick Link. My example uses Gmail’s shorthand for finding the unread mail in your inbox. Input l:^u l:^i into the Search box at the top of your Gmail. Click the Search Mail button. All unread mail in your inbox will be listed. Now go to the Quick Links box and select Add Quick Link. A prompt will appear asking for a name for your Quick Link.

Input a name (I used Unread Mail) and click the OK button. Your newly created Quick Link will now appear in your Quick Link box.

Superstars – This is a great addition to the Gmail interface as it adds additional star icons so you can better identify key emails.

After you have enabled Superstars, go to the General tab under Settings. Go to the Superstars section. Drag any of the available icons you wish to use to the In Use row and any you don’t want, drag to the Not in use row.

Click the star next to the desired email until the proper icon appears.

Custom keyboard shortcuts – This allows you to change the default keyboard mapping for your Gmail to better meet your needs. After you enable this feature, a Keyboard Shortcuts tab will be added to the Settings menu. From here, you can easily modify your keyboard shortcuts.

A few weeks ago, I blogged about putting Twitter in Firefox’s Sidebar, using the mobile version of the microblogging site. I have since changed to a much better Twitter client for my sidebar, namely Hahlo, a Twitter client designed for the iPhone.

Hahlo is superior in functionality to the mobile version of Twitter, its biggest strength is that it automatically refreshes to reveal new tweets. Along with that, it is much nicer to look at.

To add Hahlo to your Firefox Sidebar, drag the following link to your Bookmark Toolbar.

Hahlo

Right-click on the newly created bookmark. Select Properties. Check the Load this bookmark in the sidebar checkbox. Click the Save Changes button.

Launch Hahlo from the bookmark. Login using your Twitter username and password and you’re good to go.

Firefox’s sidebar is a perfect tool for accessing mobile sites. By using these sites in the sidebar, you can utilize various web apps and sites without having to leave the page you are on. In fact, you can create your own personal Flock-type browser if you take the time to find the necessary sites. I have used both Twitter and del.icio.us in my sidebar and have been quite pleased with the results.

Here’s what Twitter looks like in the Firefox Sidebar:

And here’s del.icio.us in the sidebar:

Other sites with great potential for Sidebar usage:

1. Remember The Milk

2. Pownce

3. Facebook

4. Google Calendar

5. Jaiku

7. Google Docs

8. Flickr

To add the desired mobile site to your Firefox sidebar:

1. Open Firefox.

2. Go to the menu, click Bookmarks and select Organize Bookmarks.

3. In the right pane, select Bookmarks Menu.

7. Check the Load this bookmark in the sidebar checkbox.
