Web-based IM client roundup

AIM Express

A few days ago I wrote about Meebo and people took an interest to the web-based IM client, so I decided to do a quick roundup of the available clients. You should have a somewhat modern browser for these to work (IE 5.5, Netscape 7.1, Mozilla 1.0 or higher) but that shouldn’t be a hurdle for anyone. If you can’t install an IM application at work or school, then these web-based solutions should get you your IM fix. This list is by no means definitive, particularly when it comes to Jabber clients, of which there are many, but covers some of the more popular solutions. I’ve decided to exclude any commercial (read: not free) solutions, or those that require you to run them on your own server. Read on for more information!

  • Meebo- supports AIM/ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, and Jabber/Google Talk. You may run into some problems getting it to work on some browsers, but the application is still in beta. I’ve tested it on IE and Firefox and it works fine, though I see no reason why it wouldn’t work on Safari as well.
  • eMessenger- allows you to access AIM, MSN, and Yahoo via a web interface. Unlike Meebo, it also offers a lightweight version which can be run on mobile devices and WAP-enabled phones.
  • AIM Express- AOL has their own web-based IM client which looks like it hasn’t been updated since I first tried it years ago, but still works great if you just want to get on AIM to chat. It should work just fine on Windows and Mac systems.
  • MSN Web Messenger- Microsoft also has a web-based MSN client, but it will only run Windows, and you must have your pop-up blocker disabled. What! Shame on you Microsoft!
  • ICQ2Go!- if you still use ICQ, this client should suffice your needs. It’s Java-based, so you must have Java installed on your computer, but it also means that it will run on older browsers and almost any operating system.
  • JWChat- a web-based Jabber client which supports Windows, OSX, and Linux. You can download the application and run it on your own server, or log in via their own service at JWChat.org. This client also supports gateways to connect to other services like AIM/ICQ, MSN, etc.
  • Jabber dot ZIM- another web-based Jabber client, similar to JWChat, except this one is Java-based.

What most people fail to realize is the fact that you’re submitting your online indentity to these people. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m not give that info up so easily just because it looks spiffy.

#2, I agree 100%, I tried meebo with my dummy accounts, but I wont risk giving them my main account passwords

There is another IM client that you may be leaving out of the picture…

trillian (www.trillian.cc) is similar to meebo and supports AIM/ICQ, MSN and Yahoo. I dont think theyve updated it for Gtalk just yet and theyre still working out some kinks in it, but its worth checking out. However, you might not wanna bother with it if you like flashy interfaces b/c trillian is about as simple as they come

  6. Jared Says:

Do these services route the IM traffic though their servers, or do they try to go through the local ports on my PC. My work does not allow IM traffic normally, but if these services did the IM work and just sent me the results via port 80, then that would be groovy.

  13. TipMonkies » Blog Archive » Gtalkr, the web-based Google Talk client Says:

[…] We’ve discussed quite a few web-based IM clients before, but there is a new one in town for all you Google Talk fans called Gtalkr. Unlike all the others, Gtalkr is done entirely in Flash, and integrates extremely well not only with Google Talk, but with a couple other Google services. Once logged in, you can view your buddy list, receive GMail message notifications, and even search Yahoo! Maps for places and directions. Why the developers chose Yahoo! Maps as opposed to Google Maps is probably a matter of the Yahoo! service having a better interface, though I’d have expected them to use Google services through and through. In the future, the developers also plan on adding support for del.icio.us and Flickr. Gtalkr can also be extended by creating your own widgets.
