Disposable e-mail address services

One of the best tricks to stop spam e-mail from reaching your inbox is by creating a disposable e-mail address. I’ve used a Hotmail account for spam for a long time, but recently, many services have popped up which serve exclusively to route spam to. Some of these services provide RSS feeds of e-mail, others let you forward e-mail to your real account. Some require registration, some don’t. See what works best for you, though my favorite is still Mailinator (NOTE: Brian, who writes for TipMonkies sometimes, works on Mailinator and created the great Spam Map for the service) because of its simplicity. All the following are free.

  • AnonInbox- no registration, simple, no frills.
  • DodgeIt- no registration required, provides RSS feeds, receive-only.
  • E4ward- requires registration, provides mail forwarding, allows multiple aliases of an account.
  • GreenSloth- no registration required, receive-only, e-mail expires automatically after a week.
  • KasMail- requires registration, allows up to 25 aliases, can set aliases to expire after a certain amount of time.
  • Jetable- provides mail forwarding, account autoexpires after certain amount of time.
  • Mailinator- no registration required, provides handy spam map, receive-only, e-mail expires automatically after a few hours.
  • MailNull- requires registration, provides mail forwarding.
  • PookMail- no registration required, very simple to use.
  • SneakeMail- requires registration, provides mail forwarding.
  • SpamDay- requires registration, provides mail forwarding, account is automatically destroyed after 24 hours of opening.
  • SpamGourmet- requires registration, provides mail forwarding, can create custom aliases which automatically expire after a certain number of e-mails received.
  • Spam.la- no registration required, no frills. You can see all spam being sent to all Spam.la accounts, or just your own.
  • SpamMotel- requires registration, provides mail forwarding, mail can be accessed through desktop e-mail clients, can reply to e-mail from your real e-mail address using SpamMotel e-mail.
  • TempInbox- no registration required, provides RSS and Atom feeds, receive only, supports many different languages.
  • Will Hack for Food- requires registration, account expires after user indicated period of time, best name ever.

I purposedly left out any non-free options, or services which I felt had weak privacy policies.

UPDATE: added Spam.la (thanks Cristhian)
UPDATE 2: added Greensloth, SpamDay, and Will Hack for Food (thanks Jason, David, and Random)
UPDATE 3: I’ve been informed the downloadable component for SpamMotel is NOT required so I have added it to the list (thanks Jim)
UPDATE 4: added AnonInbox (thanks Jes)
UPDATE 5: added MailNull and TempInbox (thanks Austin and David)

bloglines.com also offers the same service as “email subscriptions” a throw away email addres that can also be used to reply to messages. I have used this to subscribe to various product site lists to keep up with what they’re doing, but not get spammed. If I do get spam at that address, i just kill it, and resubcribe with a new throw away one. thanks bloglines!

  4. Martin Says:

Interesting…I’ve used BlogLines extensively, and had no clue they offered this feature. Very cool indeed.

  5. Pablo Andrés Says:

I’ve been using MyTrashMail.com for a while, its just works fine.

    Another one: http://spamday.com

  8. Anonymous Says:

I’ve been using SpamGourmet for years now, and it works great. Email address generation is automatic, and collapsable… better yet - they offer “advanced” services for those interested in getting more out of their service. I’ve tried some of the others and I’ll stick with Spamgourmet!

  9. Beano Says:

I have to agree with Anonymous. Spamgourmet rocks. I’ve been using it for about 4 years now.

  10. Jalada Says:

I agree with “Random”. Willhackforfood.biz, created by the guys at DDP, is great. If I use any, I use that one. Never use ones such as mailinator, for registering for places with your real password, because someone can pretend to be you and use a “Forgot my Password” link to get your real password emailed to an email address they can access (’cos no registration is required).

Its a big security risk, and an easy way to gleam loads of passwords (just look on big forums for @mailinator.com address or whatever).

    another great site is www.GreenSloth.com
it requires no registration and as simple as dodgeit.

  13. dewey1973 Says:

Check out gishpuppy.com! You can create an e-mail address for every site individually. They also have browser integration for Firefox and IE. Just right click the e-mail field and “Gish It!” If you start getting spam, you know where it is coming from so you can expire that address. Or set them for auto-expiration. I couldn’t live without this one!

  14. Jared Says:

I have to agree that spamgourmet has all the options I could want. The advanced features allow you to send and recieve from your “spamgourmet” account. They also have extra domains that you can use. I didn’t like having an address that had the word “spam” in it, so I chose to use their xoxy.net domain. It works exactly the same but looks more like a real world address.

I like that addresses don’t auto expire (i.e. just go away). If the number of addresses has been exceeded, then you can always just add a few more to make sure that you are not missing anything. Also, you can add an “exclusive sender” which can be a single account or an entire domain that will let email through regardless if the number of total emails allowed has been exceeded. It’s very handy!

  15. James Says:

I like mailinator.com but it doesn’t seem to be working for at least a couple of days now. The website is still there, but I can’t retrieve any emails sent there. Dodgeit.com seems to be the best of the others that don’t require registration, like mailinator.

The service comes with all the features we’ve come to expect from such services including the ability to create fake e-mail addresses, access the account from anywhere, and RSS feeds for your inbox, but also offers some great features not available in all services including the ability to filter your real inbox through its servers, customizing the sensitivity levels of your filters, adding custom mail filters, and sending auto-replies while you’re on vacation. The service is free for up to 20MB of messages, with more filtering capacity coming at a cost (starting at around $5 USD). […]
