Beating Netflix throttle

Netflix

I recently switched from Blockbuster’s online rental service (yes they have one) to Netflix, and one thing I’ve noticed are the slightly longer waits for new releases, which I am attributing to their much larger userbase. I came upon an interesting post which seems to get rid of the long wait times, though neither I nor the original author know whether this will always work.

From the article: “Earlier this week, NF showed that they had received one of my movies back, so I quickly put “40 Year Old Virgin” in my queue…The status of “Virgin” was initially listed as “Very long wait.” As a test, I took out all of the other movies in my queue. Within about an hour, the status of “Virgin” switched from “Very long wait” to “Shipping.” I got it the next day. I’ve only tried this twice; but, both times, it has moved movies out of “Very long/long wait” status as soon as one of my outstanding discs is returned to NF.”

Apple’s AAC format is becoming increasingly more popular (NOTE: it’s the format used to distribute music in iTunes) and so many people are slowly turning to it as the format of choice. I recently wanted to convert my (legal) MP3s into AAC to see if there would be any size differences. Want to know how to convert between the two formats? Read on!

Yojimbo

We’ve written about software that helps you organize information before, whether on the desktop or online, but most only work for certain types of information, such as events, media, etc. If you’re looking for an application which will help you organize nearly any type of media and non-media, then you might want to take a look at Yojimbo, at least if you’re using a Mac. Yojimbo is super simple to use and you can organize anything from PDF files, documents, bookmarks, and notes to reference materials, jokes, serial numbers and passwords. The applications isn’t free ($39 USD), but if you need one a one stop place to organize all your information, Yojimbo is one of the best solutions available today.

Send large files with MailBigFile

MailBigFile

I regularly get e-mails from readers asking for ways to send large files via e-mail without having to break it up into little pieces, and I usually have a few recommendations, but today I found MailBigFile which is one of those services which really requires no explanation. Look at the name, and you’ll easily be able to tell what it does. MailBigFile requires no registration (unlike most similar services) and still lets you send files up to 1GB in size. I haven’t seen any limitations yet on what file types can be sent which is kind of a good thing (for normal folks at least). As a big plus, all files are scanned for viruses so you never have to worry about them when using the services, and best of all, you’ll get a nice little progress bar window when you send a file so you’ll know exactly how long it will take to send a particular file. MailBigFile is totally free, and definitely tops the list in services of its kind.

Bloglines e-mail

There are many different services available nowadays which help you keep track of news items on RSS feeds through your e-mail account (for those of you who still refuse to use an RSS aggregator). Even here at TipMonkies we use Blogarithm if you’d like news items in your inbox. If you’re already using Bloglines as your aggregator of choice, as I am, you might be happy to know that you can now subscribe to mailing lists that don’t provide RSS feeds directly from your account Bloglines account by creating a special e-mail account with the service. You can find the details over at the Manage E-mail page on Bloglines.

Undervolt your laptop for longer battery life

Undervolt your laptop

Most people are used to hearing about overclocking a computer in order to make it run faster in order to better run certain CPU-intensive applications (usually games). What most people probably haven’t heard of, or even want to try, is underclocking a computer. Underclocking might not do much for desktop computers, but could provide longer battery life and cooler running temperatures for laptops, and after all, who doesn’t want to get the most out of those skimpy laptop batteries.

NordicHardware has posted a guide to underclocking a laptop using some very simple software. The results? About ten more minutes of battery life, and a temperature drop of a few degrees. Nice!

I’m a big fan of Opera, an alternative web browser available for many different platforms. Today, the company announced a new released for Java-enabled mobile phones called Opera Mini. The download is very small at only 100k and can be downloaded in various ways (more over at the Opera Mini site). It’s good to see a capable browser finally available on mobile phones. Remember, standard data rates apply.

Jabphone

I’m a big fan of Google Talk (my username is ferrettim in case you want to get in touch), but didn’t really like how limited its VOIP capabilities are, so I’m stuck using Skype, at least for now. Today, I found a pretty cool tool called Jabphone which allows you to make outgoing calls directly from Google Talk! The service uses libjingle, Jabber, and Asterisk to work and looks quite promising. You get 15 free minutes of calling time and more minutes can be bought by creating an account at the Jabphone website.

Find the most downloaded Konfabulator widgets

Dashboard widgets

So here’s another reason I’m jealous of the Mac…Dashboard. Sure, us Windows users have Konfabulator (or Yahoo! Widgets I guess it’s called now), but there’s nothing like simple operating system integration (which Apple does so well). Still Konfabulator has some excellent features and tons of different freely downloadable widgets, and you can find the most popular ones here.

The list includes close to 500 widgets in all categories ranging from system information via the very useful miniCPU to the somewhat entertaining Hula Girl widget. It was created using Ning, by the way, which makes creating web applications a breeze.

Tickr for Flickr

You know, sometimes I really regret having bought a Dell laptop instead of an iBook simply because of some of the cool software available for the Mac. One such tool is Tickr for Flickr a free application which scrolls your favorite Flickr photos across your Mac desktop. With the latest release, you can customize where to place the scrolling slideshow (left, right, or bottom), as well as how large or small you’d like the slideshow to be. Additionally, you can set transparency levels, search for particular types of photographs, as well as sort them by a few different types of category including date taken, date posted, how interesting the photo is, etc. Tickr for Flickr requires Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later.
