The Joys of Jott

A big part of “Getting Things Done” is the getting stuff out of your head and into a trusted system. Nowadays I don’t leave my bedroom in the morning to let the dogs out without paper and a pencil or pen. This works well most of the time, but there are times that I am walking or driving and writing isn’t easy. I’ve been looking for a good way to get around this for months now and finally found it a little while ago. It’s a new service called Jott. Jott allows me to dial a number and leave a voice message. That message is then transcribed and can be sent to me, or if needed as an email to a contact. To many people this may seem a bit silly and overly connected, but as a capture tool it has been great. The service is free (for now at least) and does a pretty good job of transcribing what you say. In addition to handling words you can also spell out something, which I thought could be useful with a little scripting to send commands to a unix computer.

BTW, I hope you know that the transcribing is done by humans with back office in India. It freaks me out.

Krish… I’ve been doing some research on the reliability of Jott. And this is for you and others who share your fear…..There is absolutely nothing to worry about! First of all, yes there are human transcribers but not limited to people in India. There are human transcribers everywhere AND voice recognition software that both work together to make transcriptions to the TEE. If you think about it..and this also came to my conclusion…. I’d think Jott took plenty of time to think of security issues as such. I’ve been a Jotter for a while and I haven’t gotten anything like a telemarketer call on my cell or weird spam or junk mails. I can go more into detail if you’d like but I’d say give these guys a shot! I did

I always had this gnawing suspicion in the back of my mind that humans were transcribing my Jotts. The accuracy of my messages and details about words not understood was all too eerily human-like. Now I know.
