Tech-Recipes (hearts) TipMonkies (hearts) You.

I think I am safe in saying that TipMonkies is a great website that recently has been fading away. Looking at the stats, it appears that many of you, like me, have continued to visit on a daily basis and stay subscribed to the RSS feeds.
As one of the editors/founders of tech-recipes, I approached Martin and asked if we could take over the site to try to shock it back to life. Recently starting a new job and moving to NYC, Martin no longer has the energy to drive the site forward. Hopefully we can help. Martin wants to continue to contribute to this project, and we hope that he does so.
I have always enjoyed TipMonkies, and it pains me to see it failing to thrive.
Other than to develop content, what can I do to bring TipMonkies back to its original form and glory? I’ll get out free shirts to the best suggestions (be sure to leave a real email address in the email field).
At least on tech-recipes, we have continue to grow through user-submitted content. If you want to contribute to this project, please mention it in the comments. I would like to use all the ad money obtained from this project to reward users who submit content. I think that is only fair–especially during this time of rebuilding.
I look forward to your responses and appreciate your continued support of this project.

Would you consider merging with another site? We’re looking for people.

Twice! The irony is uncanny! So sorry for spamming your comments like this.

Thanks so much for your effort here, Davak! I too (heart) TipMonkies, and check the feed every single day, just wishing there will be some useful new content.
I think you should definitely preserve the site’s overall look and feel. It’s very well-designed. Also, as I use Win, Lin and Mac, this site is one of the rare breeds that offer stuff about all three–please continue to keep it multi-platform!
One challenge, I think, is that TM and TR serve pretty much the same purpose. So, while this would naturally make you sympathetic to the state of the TM site, it’ll be interesting to see how they’ll compliment each other (as opposed to merely echoing each other). The existing content on both sites not only overlaps, the whole collection of articles could live entirely on either site. I don’t have a good answer for this.
One thing that could be introduced, or given emphasis, is some of the underlying concepts and benefits of all these tools, tweaks, hacks and reviews. Some folks would certainly climb aboard and begin to ‘better’ their systems, add useful tools and make their lives easier if they could be sold on what’s to gain in advance.
The average end-user in an average home/office is not really the intended audience here, I know. But almost everyone stands to benefit from the knowledge here in some way, and I believe that more individuals would be motivated to put these bits to use if given a plain-English explanation of the types of things and what they all do. Like a Tip Primer, or A Brief History of Modern Computer Tips that provides an easily-digested synopsis of the various types of tips here offered, and piques the interest of the computer layperson.
May your luck be good, and your tips be many!

@Evan (Evam!):
I’ll take a look at your site. We have absorbed many sites over the years and would certain always enjoy working with other tutorial authors.
cee-jay:
Thanks you for your insightful comments. I’ll email you to get your information for one of our shirts.
I agree that tipmonkies and tech-recipes should not echo content. Tipmonkies has always had a different feeling than TR, and I plan to keep it that way. TR tries to take a step-by-step approach, and TM is much more freeform.
As a multi-platform kinda guy, I don’t plan on trying to hyperfocus TM in any one direction.
The “plain English” idea is a good one and I’ll have to give that more thought. A few posts detailing some of the more valuable articles on TM is an excellent idea.
It’s great to hear from you.

Do take a look, no content up yet, just got the actual site up and should start working on stuff soon, but finding more writers is a bit of a pickle. If anything you can contact me.

Would you consider selling the website to someone that would continue working on it and improving it?

I don’t think that I would want to sell tipmonkies. It’s a thrill to be working with the tipmonkies community.
I would gladly take on partners though.

So which site I got to take over?
Btw I think that with little subscribers content help any site can go back to alive stage. Weather that is tech rec. or TipMo.

Why don’t use the community as a writer?
I mean, if I have a good article, I could simply send it to you, you display it and the community can add stuff in it… like a wiki!
I have always like the smart and short article that Martin wrote during the time. It was straight to the point and well writen. So I think you/we should point in that direction for the future. Maybe like others said, join another website where they write about something different (ex.: movie, music,…) and you will treat all the informations you used to treat…

For me, one of the main drawbacks of TM, at least lately, is that it echoes so much of the Lifehacker content…but two or three days later. I don’t have much advice for *how* to get unique content but I will say that that’s what will keep me on as a reader.
