No, we’re not dead

I apologize for the lack of updates the past few days. Regular readers know we update anywhere from five to ten times a day, but I recently started a new job which is taking up quite a bit of my time. Between that, the couple of hours I spend at the gym daily, and my family and friends, I’ve had a difficult time finding the time. The site is not dead though, and I’ll resume regular posts as normal starting tomorrow, even if I have to wake up at 6 every morning. Thanks all for understanding and keep visiting!

Where’s the podcast?

As some of you know, we used to do a weekly (sometimes bi-weekly) podcast here at TipMonkies, but it’s been missing in action for a little over a month. I’ve been getting a lot of e-mails asking what happened to it so let me explain. The podcast is NOT dead, it’s just on a temporary hiatus. Our host is kind enough to provide us with 10GB of bandwidth per day (300GB/month), but as the site has been growing tremendously in popularity over the past month or two, more and more of that bandwidth is being used up by site visits, images, etc. As a result, I’ve decided to put it on hold for a bit while I look at some good hosting options (by good I mean cheap and with tons of bandwidth). To you regular subscribers (which is a few hundred of you), my apologies. The podcast WILL be back for sure, before the end of the year, this I promise. If you’ve never listened to the podcast, check them out right here, visit our Odeo channel, or find us on iTunes. Expect another announcement as we get ready to relaunch the podcast in the next few weeks.

TipMonkies on CommandN

TipMonkies on CommandN

I was out of town yesterday visiting a friend for his 21st birthday (happy birthday, Chris!), hence the lack of updates, and didn’t get home until quite late, but imagine my surprise when I fired up iTunes and started watching the latest episode of one of my favorite IPTV shows, CommandN. Guess what I saw? Yup, TipMonkies! Amber and Mikey, who also work on the G4 show, Call for Help, featured TipMonkies in their latest episode and talked a bit about our Google services article which we posted a few days ago. Thanks, guys!

If you’ve never watched CommandN, head on over to their website and check it out. You can stream the latest episode directly from their site, or download it via direct download or through their vidcast RSS feeds. Amber and Mikey do a great job discussing the latest tech news and trends. By the way, the TipMonkies segment starts at around the 5 minute mark.

More site updates, and our first 1000 posts!

After nearly 7 months on the web, I’m pretty happy to say that we’ve finally reached 1000 posts (1006 actually)! When I started this site, I never thought we’d have as many readers or as many posts as we do, so I couldn’t be more excited. Thanks to everyone for making it worthwhile and hopefully, we can get to 2000 by the first year mark next April!
Additionally, I’ve been doing a lot of code tweaking on our backend to make the site 100% accessible by everyone. I’m about 2 errors away from being able to say that we conform to the WAI-AAA accessibility guidelines standard, and hopefully, I’ll get those worked out by the end of the week. When that is done, I’ll also make sure to change some of the colors we use for all you color blind readers as well; I haven’t forgotten about you! Finally, you may or may not have noticed a slight decrease in loading times. Mike recoded our navigation menu from the old JavaScript one, to one using CSS, and it cut off about half a second or so in load times. Thanks, Mike!

Happy Thanksgiving Day!

Thanksgiving Day

I’m sure that many of you will probably not be online much tomorrow, at least not in the United States, so from the TipMonkies family to yours, we wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving Day! I always enjoy the good ol’ turkey day; it’s a great time to spend with family, hang out, and eat tons of delicious food. Having grown up in South America, I didn’t get to experience Thanksgiving Day until I moved to the U.S. nearly 15 years ago, but boy is it fun. Remember not to overstuff yourself on turkey and sweet potatoes, and save me a piece of pumpkin pie!

Believe it or not, I will be updating TipMonkies throughout the day. You won’t see the usual number of posts, but enough to kill a few minutes between your main course and dessert. After all, there’s nothing on TV anyway, so be sure to visit us tomorrow! I’ll post a photo or two of my turkey tomorrow, as well…I can’t wait. Hope you all have lots to be thankful for.

Congratulations, Jason and Katie!

I wanted to take a moment to congratulate my good friend Jason Hamilton, who has written articles for Tipmonkies before and got us our very first Slashdotting back in June, and his (now) wife Katie on their wedding yesterday! We wish you both the best in everything and many, many years of happiness.

I’ve been swamped with other things lately and the growth of this little site keeps growing strong (I’m expecting at least about a 150% growth from last month…wow). I guess many of you probably couldn’t tell that I have real world responsabilities since I post so frequently, but I do, so I’ve decided to add long time TipMonkies reader and overall nice guy Jay Koby to the squad. He’ll be helping out mostly, but not exclusively, with hardware and software tips and hacks. Jay will be joining myself, Mike, and Brian as regular contributors (and yes we have a few other non-regulars, too). Welcome, Jay!

Don’t forget that without readers, this site would be nothing, so as always, feel free to continue sending us tips via e-mail. Some of you send me at least a few a week so keep it up!

Quickie updates and the future of the podcast

Just wanted to let everyone know I’ll be away from home starting tomorrow (Friday) morning until sometime Sunday afternoon, but even though I will be away, this site will remain updated for that entire time. Since I took the day off from posting yesterday to spend some time with my wife, who finally got a day off, I figured I’d post through the weekend so you guys don’t think I’m slacking (never!). I’m spending a large chunk of my day today posting drafts which will get automatically posting through the next few days. I’ve also been busy squashing some minor bugs through the site. When Mike and I worked out the new design, it left a few minor things unresolved so the site should be bug-free and 100% valid (and hopefully 100% accessibility standards compliant) by tomorrow morning. Thanks to those of you who’ve sent in bug reports!

As for the podcast, it’s been MIA for about 3 weeks now, but it hasn’t disappeared, I promise. Mike and I will be releasing the next show early Friday afternoon. I do want some input on things you’d like to see on the podcast. Those of you who have been undergoing podcast withdrawal for the past couple of weeks, don’t worry, things will get back to normal. Mike and I have been quite busy with other things (including illness) so we haven’t had much to do it, but tomorrow marks the return of the podcast. Stay tuned!

Want to sue Sony? Read on!

It looks like the Electronic Frontier Foundation is looking to sue Sony for the recent debacle with the rootkits they are installing on people’s PCs to prevent them from pirating their CDs (by the way, there is a new worm which takes advantage of this so if be careful). The EFF is looking for a few good people to e-mail them testimonials on their experiences in order to make a case. Be sure to read this Boing Boing post to see what they are looking for. California is already suing Sony so there might be something to this.

Ok, so it took me like a week longer than expected to get through all the entries (I didn’t think I’d get that many!), but I finally got through with them and here are the results. If you didn’t win, don’t be discouraged…we might have a little something coming up for the holidays if all works out. I didn’t want to use full names on here without permission so I will be e-mailing the winners today to inform them as well. On to the winners!

  • First place: Michael P.
  • Second place: Steve H.
  • Third place: Renee N.

Congratulations to you guys, and I’ll be sending out prizes this afternoon.
