These are shortcuts you can use in the wordpress post editor.
-
Bold: Alt+SHIFT+b
Italics: Alt+SHIFT+i
Link: Alt+SHIFT+a
Blockquote: Alt+SHIFT+q
Code: Alt+SHIFT+c
Read More: Alt+SHIFT+t
Unordered List (ul): Alt+SHIFT+u
Ordered List (ol): Alt+SHIFT+o
List Item (li): Alt+SHIFT+l
At least in some browsers, the shortcuts may not work exactly like the menu buttons above the edit box. For example, the menu buttons will correctly wrap tags around a highlighted text selection. The shortcuts frequently do not.
Web based “Writer” to help you focus

First off, I have to say its nice to post again after a long time away. I hope Martin and I can get this going again because I really enjoyed the site. In the time that we have been away I have become very interested in “lifehacking.” I’m into David Allen’s Getting Things Done, and other ways to live smarter. I hope to post quite a bit about that. In that vein is what I’m going to mention here. It is called “Writer” and it is a neat Web 2.0 app. Basically a while back there was a program that someone made for OSX called Darkroom, and this is a web based (and therefore cross-platform) clone.
The program gives you a very simple interface to write. In the default mode there is a black background with green text. It lets you save things and edit them later, but thats about it for features. The feature is the lack of distraction. When I was doing some stuff for school this past semester I found it very useful, because I have a terrible tendency to get involved in something else. Check it out: Writer

Better spam management for WordPress

One of the things I did before I decided to start blogging again on TipMonkies was to beef up the security around the site. While a blog is still young, you may not have many problems, but as its popularity increases, so does the chance of receiving mail and comment spam. WordPress comes with the fantastic Akismet plugin which does an amazing job at catching comment spam, but it can sometimes mislabel legitimate comments. Enter Simple Spam Filter, which allows a blog administrator to easily sort through comment spam based on common keywords found in such comments. Definitely a worthwhile addition to any running a WordPress-powered site.

Over the last few months, not only have I not had much time to update TipMonkies, but I also haven’t followed web 2.0 applications much at, more than likely due to the former reason, so I was very excited to get back into “the scene” and learn about a somewhat new service called Jaiku which aims to bring everything from your real life and your web life into one place. For those of you who have been using Twitter (yes, a review of Twitter is forecoming), you may find many of the same features in Jaiku, but if you’ve never used the service here’s what you should expect.

Vox is a brand new blogging service from the good folks at SixApart, well known for other blogging products such as the bloggin community LiveJournal, and the blogging platforms MovableType, and TypePad. Vox makes blogging simple and fun, and is in many respects similar to a MySpace page (minus the horrendous coding). Sign up for a free account, and select one of 150 different themes for your blog. Next, you can set various privacy settings so you’re in complete control over who can view your blog posts and pictures. With all that set up, you’ll want to have your friends and family join Vox, or you can become part of one of many neighborhoods and make new friends. The key part here being the last, and with so many social sites of these sort popping up I wonder how successful Vox will be. Still, Vox is beautiful and is a great alternative to other bloated services of it’s kind.

As more people buy mobile phones with video recording capabilities, and more site begin supporting video sharing, there is an increasing need for an application which makes posting video from your phone to your website extremely easy. YouTube does support such a feature but it can be a little cumbersome to use. Enter Veeker.
Veeker works like this by text messaging the video you just shot on your phone to the Veeker service which then relays it to any sites and contacts you’d added to your list. Where the video is sent depends on which address the video was forwarded too, which can make the video viewable only by you, only your contacts, or anyone with a Veeker account. Additionally, you can subscribe to a member’s RSS feed to get any of their videos! The site is in perpetual beta, and is free to sign up.

Feeds That Matter, like a people-powered blog directory

Looking for some new blogs to read? Then check out Feeds That Matter, a blog directory of sorts which analyzes Bloglines blog subscriptions to create a list of popular blogs based on topic. “By analyzing this data and combining merging folders that are very similar, we have come up with an automatic way of creating a taxonomy of popular topics and make it easy to find feeds that are most relevant to that topic.” Very simple and quite handy!
