This is a very simple tip…in order to get more screen space for websites, simply make your toolbar icons smaller by going to View -> Toolbars -> Customize and checking the Use small icons box.
Use Firefox in Safe Mode

In the event that something goes wrong with a new extension or theme you installed, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode. Safe Mode does not load any extensions and comes up with the default theme. This way you can uninstall the offending extension or theme and get things back to normal.
To enter safe mode: On Windows go to”Start -> Run” and running:
“C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe” -safe-mode
On Linux, you can go to your Terminal and run:
/path/to/firefox/firefox -safe-mode
On Mac OS X, it will look like:
/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -safe-mode

Control where links from other applicatons open in Firefox

Here’s nifty feature of Firefox. You can control where new links are opened from other applications. For example, you are browsing a page with Firefox and you flip over to your email program because you get alerted to a new mail. In the mail, you get a link to a page your friend told you to check out. When you can click it, based on these settings, it will open in a new window, a new tab or the most recent tab/window. The “most recent” entry is like IE’s default. Which is hugely annoying to me. I don’t want those email links disturbing my work.
Try this:
- Go to Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Tabbed Browsing.
- Look for the dialog “Open links from other applications in:” and make your selection from either a new window, a new tab in the most recent window or the most recent tab/window.
Speed up Firefox, the hard way

Not too long along, we discussed a program called Firetune which tweaks Firefox settings in order to speed it up. If you like to do things the hard, old fashioned way. Here’s a quick how to.
First, you need to create a file called user.js. We’ve already created one with some speed-boosting settings which you can get right here. You will need to put this file inside your Firefox profile folder, which in Windows XP is located at:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.###\
If you’re using a different operating system, you can find out where it’s located by going to this site. Additionally, there is an extensive discussion on tweaking Firefox for speed over at Mozillazine.
Firefox proxy settings

We’ve discussed various proxy servers you can use to protect your privacy before, but maybe you’re not sure where to find these settings in Firefox. Simply go to Tools -> Options -> General tab -> Connection Settings button. Sometimes you may need to put in addresses to exclude in your Firefox proxy settings. For example, if you want to exclude the address for Google Desktop Search you would put in 127.0.0.1:4664. Now, if you have more than one of these types of addresses, you need to separate them with a comma. I stress this because Internet Explorer uses semicolons to separate it’s addresses. So be very careful if you are copying your addresses from one browser to another.

Firefox is slow to load initially on Windows XP. You can speed this up a bit by using XP’s built in prefetcher. Simply right-click on the Firefox icon you use to start the browser and add the text /Prefetch:1 to the end of the line in the target field. The whole line should look something like the following:
“C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe” /Prefetch:1
