About a month ago, the uTorrent team released the long awaited uTorrent WebUI which allows uTorrent users to check the status of their torrent downloads from any computer. Now, we have the Firefox extension for uTorrent WebUI which lets you sign on to the application via Firefox, and lets you monitor your downloads right from the sidebar. Pretty cool, unfortunately, it seems to be Windows only.

Google Earth/Wikipedia

I’ve expressed my love for Google Earth quite a few times since it’s first appearance, but always wished it provided a little more real-world information out of the box instead of having to add my own data and coordinates. If you’ve ever felt the same, you might be happy to know you can know, thanks to Geocoordinates from Wikipedia for Google Earth, a website which provides a .KMZ file you can open in Google Earth and which provides coordinates for thousands of Wikipedia entries. Due to the number of possible entries, the database is split up into layers so you’re not overwhelmed by onscreen data.

Geocoordinates from Wikipedia for Google Earth is available in both English and German, and is completely free. All you need is a copy of Google Earth to enjoy it.

Install Flash 9 in Flock

Flock

For months, I’ve been using Flock as my default browser in favor of Firefox (mainly for the excellent del.icio.us integration). While Flock is derived from Firefox code, users may find certain sites may not work properly if you’re a Flock users, particularly those requiring Flash 9 to work (like the recent MySpace update). If you want to use Flash in Flock, here’s how to do it.

First, you’ll need to install Firefox (I chose to download the zipped version for quicker installation), then go to Adobe’s website and download Flash. Open the installer and choose your Firefox plugins folder. When that is done, simply copy NPSWF32.dll from the Firefox plugins directory, to the Flock plugins directory. Restart Flock and you’re done!

Firefox, IE, Opera: Which is better?

Browsers

Anyone remember Mosaic? No? Ok…ExtremeTech has written a nice browser comparison comparing the big three: Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Opera. The article starts with a little bit of browser history which some of you might want to skip, then moves to a table of features, making the comparison fairly easy to make.

Next, you’ll be presented with full page writeups of each browser, touting its successes and commenting on where each could improve. Whether you agree with the article or not isn’t really important, as each person chooses their browser based on personal browsing habits, but it’s definitely worth a read. And if you haven’t tried the latest versions of Opera or IE (all you Firefox guys), give them a try. As for me, I’ll stick with Flock :-D

My very first article for TipMonkies!!! I hope to bring you guys good and informative content through out the week. My first article is on the new release of Microsofts Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2. They’ve recently anounced a public release and can be found here. Microsoft site to download it and take it for a spin. You must have a validated copy of Windows in order to install. and run. They’ve obvisouly cleaned up their interface. Looks alittle more “bubbly”. They’ve finally got the idea that tabbed browsing is a must! and added that feature. They’ve also included a search bar on the top right corner just like Firefox. Seems like MS is finally cleaning up their act.

Google Safe Browsing for Firefox

Safe Browsing

As much as I follow Google’s new offerings, I can’t believe I let this one slide under my radar. The service is called Google Safe Browsing and it’s a small extension for Firefox which informs the user of phishing attempts by a website. If the site is trusted, you’ll see a green icon in the Firefox address bar, while if the site is malicious, you will see a red icon appear in its place. Why this hasn’t been implemented before is beyond me, but it looks to be a useful tool (by the way, Internet Explorer 7 also has this feature built in). Like everything Google, the extension is 100% free.

Google Toolbar for IE offers new features

Google Toolbar

I’m generally not very keen on using browser toolbars unless they really do provide well integrated features into services I use very often. The only toolbar I used for a while was the del.icio.us toolbar, though I no longer need to since I’m a big fan of Flock (HUGE. Yes, I am). Anyways, Google just announced on Monday an update to their Google Toolbar which has some pretty cool new features which anyone who uses mostly Google services should at least check out. Some of the key new features include the ability to add customized buttons, enhanced searching capabilities with built in search-as-you-type, the ability to send pages to friends and family via e-mail, blog, or SMS, and finally, integration with the just released Google Bookmarks (more on that one soon), yet another bookmarking service. The new toolbar is currently only available for Internet Explorer, but a Firefox version is coming soon.

[Thanks, Angela!]

I’m a big fan of Opera, an alternative web browser available for many different platforms. Today, the company announced a new released for Java-enabled mobile phones called Opera Mini. The download is very small at only 100k and can be downloaded in various ways (more over at the Opera Mini site). It’s good to see a capable browser finally available on mobile phones. Remember, standard data rates apply.

Performancing, one of my favorite new blogs, has a quick and easy blog improvements post which does of you who do run a blog should check out, even though most of the suggestions are pretty much common sense such as adding 404 error pages, providing multiple RSS feeds, etc. Additionally, the Performancing guys offer a great WYSIWYG blog editor in the form of a Firefox extension (review coming soon!).

Favoor, one more personalized homepage service

Favoor

Lately, it seems that the new popular type of web services are the so called personalized homepages which let users add RSS feeds, links, notes, widgets, search and more. These services usually also use AJAX (or Flash in the case of Goowy) to provide an interactive experience and move these widgets around. The latest entry into the (quickly becoming crowded) market is called Favoor. I had the chance to play around with it a bit, and enjoyed the ease of use and quick page loads, but was a little disappointed by the lack of widget types available. Basically, you can only add RSS feeds, links (and folders of links), and sticky notes currently, though I’m sure that in order to stay competitive, Favoor will add others in the future. One night feature which other personalized homepages don’t offer is the ability to change the theme of your page, though there is no option to select one from a list - you’ll just have to hit the themes button until you come upon one you like. Favoor is available for free (registration required) and in both English and German.
