One of the most popular GNU/Linux distributions available today is Ubuntu, so if you’re an Ubuntu user, you may want to check out these high quality wallpapers available at Desktop Nexus. Below is a preview of three of my favorites:

Yahoo! Photos shutting down

As I’m sure all of you know, Yahoo! bought Flickr way back in 2005 (oh so long ago), a move which puzzled many folks since Yahoo! already ran its own photo storage and sharing service, the uncleverly named and somewhat bland Yahoo! Photos. Well, after two years of running both services side by side, Yahoo! has decided to shut down Yahoo! Photos. Normally, when something like this happens, companies tie their users to migrating their information to the new service they own, but not the case here. If for whatever reason you’ve been using Yahoo! Photos, Yahoo! is being nice enough to let you export your photos to not just Flickr, but also Photobucket, recently purchased by MySpace, SnapFish, and many others. Way to please your users Yahoo! Now if only I could still use my old Flickr account instead of having to have a Yahoo! one, all your users would be happy…
Find images on Flickr by drawing them

I know many of you who follow this site are avid Flickr users, and are always looking for some cool new tools to use. How about being able to search through the vast collections of Flickr photos by sketching out what it is you want to see? Retrievr lets you do just that.
Retrievr provides you with a blank box in which you can create sketches, as well as a couple of tools to customize the sketch. These tools include being able to change the size of the brush as well as the paint color. As you start sketching in the blank box, Retrievr will automatically start searching through Flickr for images which match the same basic design pattern. I say basic because you may not find exactly what you need, but it sure is fun, and opens up many possibilities for the future.
Make your Ubuntu desktop look like OS X

A few years ago, the OS X Aqua look was hot, and I belonged to a community of users which modified their Windows (and sometimes Linux) desktops to look like Apple’s new OS. We had people writing applications to clone OS X features (some which Apple shut down), some writing themes, others drawing up new icons. Recently, I decided I was growing tired of the default Ubuntu desktop so I figured I’d start modifying it, and I came upon Lauri Taimila’s site which has a very handy guide to making Ubuntu look like OS X. It’s not exact, and some of the links in the guide seem to have gone missing, but overall, I’m quite happy with the conversion, and it was fairly easy to do. In the end, you’ll have much of the eye candy available to Mac users and your desktop will look a whole lot better than all that brown.
Search for free media using Briefli

By now, many of you have probably learned how to use Google’s advanced search features, and some of you may even be able to create custom search strings to find any kind of data you want. If you’re not sure what I mean about custom search strings, then you can check out this blog post which explains it pretty effectively. While you could use these custom search strings to find a particular file, you may not want to type them out in a search box or even bother remembering how to create them. No problem! Why not use Briefli? Briefli lets you create custom search strings visually by entering a search term, and then selecting a file type and file extension. Briefli will then query Google and you’ll be able to reach the deepest bowels of the Internet to find whatever your heart desires.

I remember when there was a time when you had to do a little bit of work to create your own animated GIFs, but not anymore thanks to Gickr. Gickr works by taking images from (where else?) Flickr. If you already have a Flickr account, you can enter your username and a photo tag, and choose images which you’d like to use to create your animated GIF. Don’t have a Flickr account? No problem! Gickr lets you upload up to 10 different images to create your animated GIF. The best thing about Gickr is that it’s free and there is no registration required.

If you enjoy taking lots of pictures (and I’ve seen some of your Flickr collections), you have certainly taken quite a few photographs which were ruined by passing cars, or annoying people entering the frame just as you snap the photo. Don’t you wish there were some simple way of fixing your photo without paying for expensive touch-up services or trying to capture the moment again?
Tourist Remover is a free online service which lets you do just that. Part of Snapmania, a free service which will host albums of photographs online for you (up to 100MB free), has released this new tool which will remove extraneous objects from pictures. Simply snap a second photo after the event, and Tourist Remover will mix the two photos and give you a picture perfect finish. Sweet!

You can easily make your USB flash drive show up in Windows with a custom icon. Simply find an .ico file you want to use (favicons from websites work nicely). I used the TipMonkies favicon: .

So last night I sat down and was just designing some things when I made this wallpaper. I just wanted to let everyone know that they can now have it for themselves as well. It a very minimalistic wallpaper at 1600×1200, if you need another size you should be able to to it. You can download the wallpaper on my DeviantART page. Please leave a comment if you like it. Thank you to all our readers, if it wasn’t for you Tipmonkies wouldn’t be as big as it is now, and I wouldn’t be making these nice designs for everyone.

Do you have a large (and legal, of course) movie and music collection on your PC? If so, you may want to keep a collection of all album and DVD box art on your PC as well in order to more easily find what you’re looking for. If so, check out CoverDude, a free site which finds exactly what you’re looking for by grabbing the images from Amazon’s database (as many other applications do). You get album art in three different sizes, and in a couple of variations if they are available.
