SLAX

I’m a huge fan of live-CD Linux distros, particularly when I want to recommend Linux to someone who is unwilling to dual boot or completely get rid of Windows on their machine. One of the more popular live-CD distros available (probably behind Knoppix) is SLAX, based on the fantastic Slackware distro. One problem with live-CD distros though, is that once you reboot your system, you will lose any configuration changes you’ve made while running the system, since everything is running off a CD. Some live-CD distros let you save configuration files to a floppy drive or USB key, but what if you don’t have these devices available? SLAX now offers a new feature which lets you save the configuration files to the web, making them accessible from any computer with an internet connection. Trying out live-CDs just got much easier. You can check out the guide at the SLAX webconfig page.

About two weeks ago, I wrote a post on how to download Yahoo! Launch videos to your desktop using a couple of free utilities based on a guide I found over at Uneasy Silence. It looks like the information has been updated and you can now download 700k streams, which offer better quality and a larger viewing format, to your desktop by using Stricky’s updated study instead of the SteamKing Utility link we gave you in the original guide. Enjoy!

Yahoo! Launch is a Yahoo! service which offers various music videos and streaming radio, but one of its biggest downfalls is its inability to work with Netscape-based browsers (like Mozilla and Firefox). You’d think in today’s day and age, major companies would support popular alternative browsers, but not in this case. Fortunately, you could always download the videos with a little tweaking and by using the awesome (and free) media player Video Lan Client, or VLC. The best part is that this will work on Windows, Macs, and Linux machines. Read on to learn how.

People often ask me what software I use for a particular task, and I happily tell them, but I often thought, why not just create a site where people can find that software? That’s one of the reasons TipMonkies was born, in fact; however, there is a new site which can only be described as del.icio.us for software, and it’s called MyProgs. Create an account, and start adding your software, tagging it with keywords based on what the application does. You can find software according to operating system, usage (e-mail, dvd playback), or license (free being the best). If you’re looking to find some great new software, browse around MyProgs for a few minutes and I guarantee you will find something useful.

TiVo is a great piece of equipment which lets you record TV shows and watch them at your leisure, but it would be a better piece of equipment if you could also view your home movies from it, or maybe listen to podcasts or MP3s. Well, now you can, thanks for an amazing open-source project called Galleon. With Galleon, you can stream any type of media from a PC to your TiVo thanks to TiVo’s hidden web server. You can play MP3s, view photo albums, listen to streaming online radio stations via Shoutcast, get weather information, read RSS feeds, read e-mail, get movie times, download podcasts, and more, all from inside your TiVo! Galleon is a Java application and will therefore run on Windows, OSX, and Linux, and being open-source, it’s completely free.
