Windows Mobile 6.0 Office for Windows Mobile 5

I recently picked up the “Cingular 2125″ Windows Phone. As a previous user of a Pocket PC, I thought it would have similar MS Office file capabilities built in. But I was wrong.

With the new version of Windows Mobile that is now available, they have finally added Office capabilities to the smartphone software, but this hasn’t done much good for those still stuck with Windows Mobile 5. Now someone has pulled the apps from a Windows Mobile 6 and ported them over for 5. I haven’t personally tried this yet, and it is certainly out of the range of what Microsoft would probably reccomend, but it seems like a potentially useful fix. I plan to try it soon, and if any readers have, comment on the success of it.

Ubuntu expanding to the mobile world

I’m a huge Linux fan. In fact, I’ve been running it as my main operating system for close to five years now, so I was really excited to hear that the good folks over at Ubuntu are developing a version of the extremely popular distro for mobile devices. While Linux on mobile phones and PDAs isn’t anything new, the huge popularity and ease of use of Ubuntu could help the market expand drammatically. The mobile version of Ubuntu is expected to be released in October of this year along with the next release of the desktop version, Ubuntu 7.10.

Carry NYC subway lines on your iPod w/ ZSubway

ZSubway

I lived in New York City for about twelve years, and still have family there so I head up there once in a while. While we don’t have subways where I live, they are an essential part of getting around New York, as anyone who has lived there can attest. If you’re a local, you may know the subway system by heart, but tourists have an extremely tough time finding their way around the tunnels sometimes. If you’ve ever been in that situation, then maybe you should download ZSubway, and load it onto your iPod.

ZSubway is basically a set of images which you can view with an iPod (and a few select other players like the Creative Zen). The images pertain to the various subway lines and show at what times a line will stop at a particular stop and when the lines will run express. ZSubway is completely free.

Veeker

As more people buy mobile phones with video recording capabilities, and more site begin supporting video sharing, there is an increasing need for an application which makes posting video from your phone to your website extremely easy. YouTube does support such a feature but it can be a little cumbersome to use. Enter Veeker.

Veeker works like this by text messaging the video you just shot on your phone to the Veeker service which then relays it to any sites and contacts you’d added to your list. Where the video is sent depends on which address the video was forwarded too, which can make the video viewable only by you, only your contacts, or anyone with a Veeker account. Additionally, you can subscribe to a member’s RSS feed to get any of their videos! The site is in perpetual beta, and is free to sign up.

SRobbin

Maybe you’re on the road a lot, or you’re bored at work and you’d like to watch some videos, but have no access to a computer. What do you do? You could always flip open your mobile phone and try to search for some videos online, but some sites don’t support phone browsers, or are too cumbersome to browse from a phone. Fortunately, there’s a cool new web app which lets you search through Google Video. Simply type http://srobbin.com/mobilevideo into your phone’s browser, and search away. There are a couple of catches though. You do need to have an unlimited data plan (unless you want to pay the huge bill), your phone’s browser must support XHTML (try Opera Mini, FREE), your phone must have enough storage to download the videos, and your phone must be able to play AVI or MP4 videos. If all these apply to you, you’re in for a nice and easy experience.

Flurry

Flurry is a pretty cool new service/application which helps you bring all your countless e-mail accounts and favorite news headlines to your cellphone. Signing up for an account is free, and you’ll receive a text message with a link to download the application. After you’ve set that up, you can access any number of POP mail servers with almost no configuration. You’ll have access not just to your e-mail, but also any contacts from that service, and Flurry will even let you view certain attachments like photos. From my tests so far, the application is pretty fast, but be sure to have signed up for a data plan from your cellphone service provider or your next bill will not be pretty to look at.

By the way, my favorite e-mail service, Goowy, now supports Flurry, so you can access the Flash-only site in HTML glory via your cellphone as well.

iPod Games

Those of you who keep up with the latest tech stuff, and chances are you do if you read TipMonkies often, may know that the new fifth generation iPods support color games which you may buy off the iTunes Music Store for a few dollars.

If you’ve been putting buying a game or two for new iPod because you were afraid to spend money without knowing what you were getting, check out the iPod Games Reviews section at iLounge which has reviews for all (currently 9) games available including Mahjong, Vortex, Cubis 2, Texas Hold ‘Em, Tetris, Bejeweled, Zuma, Mini Golf, and of course, Pac-Man. I have to say, there’s nothing like a good game of Bejeweled anywhere you go.

Make your own ringtones…free

Mobile phone carriers make billions (yes, that’s a B) of dollars every year from people who think it’s worth it to buy 30 second clips of songs for $3 USD a pop (my carrier only lets you keep them for 90 days…what a load of $h!+). If you’d like to get some custom ringtones on your phone but are unwilling to shell out money, check out HyperScore, a free application for Windows that lets you do just that. HyperScore was developed by MIT’s Media Lab, so you know it’s bound to have some cool features in it, and for the price, you really can’t go wrong.

I’m a big fan of Opera, an alternative web browser available for many different platforms. Today, the company announced a new released for Java-enabled mobile phones called Opera Mini. The download is very small at only 100k and can be downloaded in various ways (more over at the Opera Mini site). It’s good to see a capable browser finally available on mobile phones. Remember, standard data rates apply.

Yahoo! Maps, now with traffic reports

While I may be a Google fanboy, I know good software when I see it, and as I’ve mentioned in a previous post, the updated Yahoo! Maps is fantastic even though it’s still in beta. The latest update of the service has some great new features such as live traffic reports and the ability to send driving directions to a mobile phone. The traffic reports don’t work in all areas, but is still a fantastic feature for bigger cities.
