ILoveIM - Web Based IM Option

For my web-based IM needs, Meebo is still my favorite; however, tonight I decided to take a look at ILoveIM.  Meebo is frequently blocked by network firewalls, but ILoveIM is small enough that it is often spared.

ILoveIM is truly web-based and does not require java or flash.  It allows access to MSN, Yahoo, AOL, and gTalk.  It is very stable on a broad selection of web browsers.

When communicating with a contact, a seperate, resizable window opens to mimic a traditional IM program.  At the bottom of this window is a banner advertisement.

This service does not use a secure http connection so your username/password could be snagged by man-in-the-middle techniques.

If more secure services are blocked, then ILoveIM is a fine option.  Consider using a temporary account or frequent password changes if you are worried that somebody might want to hijack your account.

Do you recommend any other web-based IM clients?

A long time ago, the only real e-mail options available were AOL and Hotmail (and maybe Earthlink). As the web expanded, many new services have cropped up and replaced these as the new kings of e-mail, particularly Google’s GMail and the recently redesigned Yahoo! Mail. Not to be left behind, Microsoft has spent the past year or two beefing up its Hotmail offering and has finally relaunched it as Windows Live Mail. What they have come up with is definitely a step in the right direction.

Google Reader

Ever since I started subscribing to RSS feeds I’ve been trying out new feed readers whether they be desktop or web-based ones, never staying with one for very long (by the way, I’m currently using the fantastic NewsHutch which I’ll be reviewing shortly). When Google first released Google Reader, I wasn’t very impressed, but with the recent updates, I can say Reader is finally useful.

First off there’s a new design which makes it easier to read feeds. Additionally, there are now two different views available. You can read your feeds in expanded view like nearly any other reader or view them in list view which looks very similar to your GMail inbox, expect when you click on a title, the full article expands without a refresh.

iPod Games

Those of you who keep up with the latest tech stuff, and chances are you do if you read TipMonkies often, may know that the new fifth generation iPods support color games which you may buy off the iTunes Music Store for a few dollars.

If you’ve been putting buying a game or two for new iPod because you were afraid to spend money without knowing what you were getting, check out the iPod Games Reviews section at iLounge which has reviews for all (currently 9) games available including Mahjong, Vortex, Cubis 2, Texas Hold ‘Em, Tetris, Bejeweled, Zuma, Mini Golf, and of course, Pac-Man. I have to say, there’s nothing like a good game of Bejeweled anywhere you go.

Firefox, IE, Opera: Which is better?

Browsers

Anyone remember Mosaic? No? Ok…ExtremeTech has written a nice browser comparison comparing the big three: Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Opera. The article starts with a little bit of browser history which some of you might want to skip, then moves to a table of features, making the comparison fairly easy to make.

Next, you’ll be presented with full page writeups of each browser, touting its successes and commenting on where each could improve. Whether you agree with the article or not isn’t really important, as each person chooses their browser based on personal browsing habits, but it’s definitely worth a read. And if you haven’t tried the latest versions of Opera or IE (all you Firefox guys), give them a try. As for me, I’ll stick with Flock :-D

A lot of you may know NZXT from the cases they have made in the past, and the recent case review I did of the Lexa case. NZXT now steps into the Power Supply line with 3 models to offer you, 450w, 550w, and 650w. If NZXT makes their power supply line like they do their cases, they will have instant winners no doubt. NZXT maybe a smaller company compaired to other manufactures, but I think that they have a lot to offer the consumer market. Today we have the NZXT PRC-550w PSU to review, which has Active PFC, dual 12v rails, and more to offer you.

A lot of people record TV shows these days, while most are using the cable/satellite digital DVR boxes. If you don’t know what you’re doing then the cable/satellite DVR boxes are fine, but for those of us that do know what we’re doing this is for you. Being able to add on a PVR card or USB device to our computers is a nice feature to have. It cuts down on the monthly added expense that the cable/satellite companies charge extra to have DVR. Plus, it makes it able to record your own TV shows and then burn yourself a custom DVD to watch for later viewing, unlike having a cable/satellite DVR box which you can’t do that with. From what i’ve seen those recorded shows are stuck on the cable/satellite DVR boxes until you delete them. Today we have the Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB2 tuner to review. Having a PVR is great to watch all your network channels, plus record them for later viewing. Some people might just use a PVR to watch TV on their PC, while others will record shows and burn them to DVD. PVR is becoming very inexpensive these days that almost anyone can afford it.

Gmail + Growl

Gmail+Growl

I came across this link on del.icio.us. It’s a gMail notifier through Growl which is another notifying program which you can customize to notify you of any changes in any program your running. Unfortunately we all PC users can’t use this. It’s only for Mac users!!! I don’t have a Mac so I can’t even test out Growl or even Gmail+Growl. Someone test it out and tell me how it is. I’m hearing some rave reviews on it, so give it a try.

Growl is a simple tool that allows applications to send out notifications to your screen. Notifications appear as small windows with a bit of text and an icon. Gmail+Growl works inside of Gmail notifier to send Growl notifications whenever new mail is received.

In the case of Gmail+Growl’s notifications, the icon is that of the sender’s Address Book entry and the text is the subject and an excerpt of the message. However, Growl notifications can look very different depending on which Growl display you use.
