Ever since iTunes 7 came out recently, people have been complaining about weird issues with playlists being deleted, and various other stability issues. Apple has quickly come to the rescue and released and update to iTunes 7 which should hopefully fix all these issues. While you’re at it, why not get some free content for your new iPod? If you’d like to see some of the free media available on the iTunes Music Store for download, check out It’sFreeDownloads, a cool site which keeps a handy list of free content on Apple’s download service. After all, who doesn’t love free!?

Flurry

Flurry is a pretty cool new service/application which helps you bring all your countless e-mail accounts and favorite news headlines to your cellphone. Signing up for an account is free, and you’ll receive a text message with a link to download the application. After you’ve set that up, you can access any number of POP mail servers with almost no configuration. You’ll have access not just to your e-mail, but also any contacts from that service, and Flurry will even let you view certain attachments like photos. From my tests so far, the application is pretty fast, but be sure to have signed up for a data plan from your cellphone service provider or your next bill will not be pretty to look at.

By the way, my favorite e-mail service, Goowy, now supports Flurry, so you can access the Flash-only site in HTML glory via your cellphone as well.

MAKE

Ever wondered what the future of print media might be? Make Magazine does, and they’ve put it into full effect by offering subscriptions via RSS for both print and digital subscribers.

When you subscribe to Make, you can request to receive a digital edition of the magazine instead of having a paper copy mailed to your home. With the new service, current subscribers can use a private RSS feed (which requires a username and password) to read the entire contents of the magazine in a feedreader, including projects, how-to’s, articles, and more. If you don’t wish to subscribe, you can even use search terms as a subscription.

Many of you have multiple e-mail addresses, partly due to wanting to keep work and personal lives separate, but also to keep spammers from hopefully ever reaching your beloved inbox. With the advent of nearly free calls thanks to VOIP services like Skype and Gizmo, why is it that we don’t yet have disposable phone numbers? Check out this interesting article and ask the author to make the software available, as it could prove quite invaluable for many of us.

Google Calendar

While I may have missed out on posting a full review of Google Calendar when it first came upon due to my extended hiatus, it does not mean I have not had a chance to play around with it a bit. One feature I always wished Google Calendar always had was daily weather forecasts. After all, you look at your calendar daily (I hope!), so why not add this extra functionality. Now, you can find not only daily forecasts, but also moon phases for…well, I guess if you’re a hobbyist astronomer or something.

Additionally, Google Calendar now comes in 17 new languages, so almost anyone around the world can enjoy this great service in his/her language. Learn all about the cool new features available at the About Google Calendar page.

Facebook

I’m not a big fan of the whole MySpace/Facebook phenomenon, though I will admit it has helped me get in touch with people I was good friends with years ago. Since the whole thing started after I had graduated from college (at least it got really big after that), I’ve used MySpace exclusively, sometimes feeling less than special since I could not join Facebook’s exclusive club; now this has changed.

Facebook has announced that starting today, anyone can join the popular site by becoming a regional user. Sure, it may not sound as special as being in the elite “I’m still in school” club, but it’s a start, and for those of us who still have friends attending various universities around the country, it’s a nice way to get in touch with them again. While I haven’t played around much with it yet, Facebook seems to be just like any other site of it’s kind offering the usual features like blogging, messaging, commenting, image uploads, etc.

GiftHat logo

How many times have you wished there was an easy way to share your wishlist online with everyone - even Grandma (who can barely find the ON button on her “interweb machine”)? Well, wish no more because now we have GiftHat.com.

GiftHat allows you to easily make a wishlist of anything you want others to buy for you and it lets you do it with all kinds of AJAX and Web 2.0 goodness (for those that don’t know, that just means the interface is slick). As we have come to expect from a Web 2.0 website, it encourages liberal use of tags on all of your gifts and you can browse through others’ gifts by tag and/or username. You even get a convenient URL for your wishlist like http://gifthat.com/brian (that’s mine). This makes it easy to give to friends and family (and to remember). If you have your own website/blog, you can also add a snippet of JavaScript from GiftHat and display your wishlist on your site.

Officially, it’s in beta right now, but it’s fully usable as-is and works great. GiftHat was/is created by a small development team and they are VERY receptive to feedback, comments, and ideas. Best part about it - it’s free and has no ads at all on the site. Check it out.

Backpack

Backpack is a pretty useful application from 37Signals which lets you keep lists and notes (among other things) online and is a great tool to keep yourself organized. One small problem is that if you wanted to update your Backpack page while on the road, you may not have access to a computer; so what do you ?

Why not send yourself a voicenote! Celltell Voicenote for Backpack lets you set up three phone numbers you are likely to call from, and tie those numbers to your Backpack account. When done, you’ll receive a phone number which you can call to leave yourself voicenotes. The service is free for now, so take advantage!
