I tend to do a lot of shopping on eBay as I’m sure many of you do because I can usually find pretty good deals. Here’s a couple of sites I use to find cheap items.

  • Misspelled Auctions, the title says it all. Misspelled auctions means that they are less likely to be found, and therefore, cheaper.
  • The Winning Bid provides a slightly better search interface for eBay auctions, making it a little easier to find what you want and in what price range.

TicTap is the perfect service for you cheapskate shoppers out there. Simply create a text message on your cellphone with an ISBN or UPC code, or simply with keywords on the item you want to buy and send the text message to 763-807-3927 and within seconds, you’ll get prices on some good deals online. Additionally, you’re given an access code so you can view your shopping history from the TicTap website if you so wish, or you can share it with friends so they can get the same bargains. Pretty neat service, and worth checking out.

I do most of my shopping online, mostly because of convenience and partly because of cheaper prices, but once in a while I do like to go out to the occasional store and buy something (usually on impulse). While watching Attack of the Show tonight, I learned about Amabuddy, a great service for those of you looking to do some comparison shopping while on the go.

Amabuddy allows you to check how much an item retails at a store and compares that to the price on Amazon. The service is simple; just call the toll-free number, 888-WE SIGNAL (888-937-4462), and follow the instructions of the very robotic sounding operator. After entering the ISBN number for the book or CD you wish to buy, Amabuddy will give you the relevant information. Pretty neat, and definitely worth it to save a few dollars.

Use your iPod as a shopping list

While not the coolest tip, it may be useful to those who carry their iPods anywhere they go (like myself). We’ve already covered lots of iPod applications, but this is a new one. I recently came upon iShop. It’s not really an application but rather a collection of blank, one-second long MP3 files tagged with popular shopping items. Simply create a playlist called Shopping, drop the MP3 files for the items you need, and you now have your shopping list on the go. Additionally, you could create the list using Notepad or any simple text editor, saving it as a text file, and dropping it into the Notes folder inside your iPod (drive F:\ under My Computer for me).
