GMail is an amazing e-mail service with lots of functionality and offers over 2GB of storage, more than any other e-mail service in the market. GMail’s e-mail services may be great (and we’ll be writing up articles on how to use them more efficiently), but the nice thing about GMail is some of the third-party add-ons that various developers have created. Today, we’ll be discussing the GMail Drive shell extension which allows you to use your GMail account as a storage drive.

Creating PDF files used to require expensive software, but now it’s easier than ever. OSX users have a convert-to-pdf function built into Pages, and OpenOffice users have enjoyed the same benefit for some time now, but what if you don’t use these applications? With PDF4Free you can easily convert any document to PDF format.

VCD, or video cd, format is not as popular as it used to be (before the invention of DVD’s), but you can still find them around in some places, including sites with legally questionable content. Whatever the source, you may not be able to play these files on your PC by default. This tip comes to me from Mike and will show you how to convert VCD’s to a more usable format using an application called IsoBuster.

Skype for Pocket PC offers some nice integration with the Contacts applications on Windows Mobile devices by adding a menu item labelled Call With Skype. The problem is, there’s no data field for a Skype ID, so while you could use SkypeOut to contact them, how do you make a regular Skype to Skype call? Simply type the Skype ID in the home phone number field, highlight it, then select Call With Skype. Problem solved! There are some problems, such as the fact that Skype must be running, but this simple tip should get you going.

A few days ago we explained podcasting and how to get started with receiving them with a little application called iPodder. The nice thing about that application is that it’s available for Windows, Mac, and Linux…but what about smartphone users? If you have one of those neat devices, check out Skookum! The application used to be free but will now run you about $10, a small price to pay if you must have your podcasts on your phone I guess. If you haven’t done so, you can check out our podcasting article.

A big thanks to Cori (who BTW, runs the great Podcast Reviews site we mentioned in an earlier post) for pointing this little gem out in his blog. Maybe you downloaded an instruction video, or a PBS show and you want to take it to go but don’t have a portable video player…no problem! Download the free Video MP3 Extractor and put it on your MP3 player!
