We don’t normally do newsbits here on TipMonkies, but this one deserves some attention. Apple is recalling batteries from some of their laptops including the 12-inch iBook, 12-inch PowerBook, and 15-inch Powerbooks. The 14-inch iBook and 17-inch PowerBooks are NOT affected. If you purchased one of the above models between October 2004 and May 2005, you may be affect. Models numbers are A1061, A1079, and A1078. If your serial number begins with HQ441 through HQ507 for the iBook models or 3×446 through 3×510 for the Powerbooks, please contact Apple.

This is a great and simple tip. As mentioned here on Slashdot. One can use an external FireWire drive as the primary drive on a Mac Mini and get signifigantly improved hard drive performance, not to mention upgrading the hard drive size becomes much easier. Current Macs have the ability to use an external FireWire drive as a boot device, and many people did a basic OSX install on their iPod to have a quick Mac repair disc. More info and benchmarks are available at this link.

While Google itself provides a GMail notifier for Windows users, it has forgotten about the Mac crowd. Luckily, you can now get a GMail notifier on OSX thanks to GMailStatus. GMailStatus simply sits on the menu bar and shows the number of unread messages in your inbox. You must be using OSX 10.3 or higher to use this application.

One of the great new features of the latest version of Mac OSX is Dashboard. It allows helpful graphical widgets to be installed with any number of helpful uses, such as the time and weather. Unfortunatly, shortly after the release, it has become apparent that this system can become easily abused. How to avoid this problem, or take care of it if you get stung? More at the link.

This is a bit less of a tip and a bit more of an announcement, but Apple released iTunes 4.8 on Monday(download here), and although it’s not really mentioned, this new version adds video support. iTunes has always been based off of Quicktime, but now you can add QT video to your iTunes library and watch them in the window, or even full screen. This means you can now organize and search your videos just like your music, and perhaps more importantly, fuels rumors that Apple may have a iTunes-ish movie store in the works!
Convert video inside iTunes
Did you know that you can extract the audio from a video in iTunes? Simply right-click the file, then select extract to AAC and within seconds you have an audio track.

So you recently upgrade to Quicktime 7 Pro only to realize your key no longer works? I bet you’re pretty disappointed that you have to pay another $30? Never fear, TipMonkies is here! The process is pretty simple and can be found in full detail right here. Please note that this hack may not last forever, nor does it give you some of the new Quicktime 7 Pro features such as automaker workflows and media skins (which most of you probably don’t use anyway). You can see an image of the successful hack right here.

People sure are finding some good uses for the iPod, huh? Today’s iPod tip involves podshanking, not to be confused with podjacking which is a totally different beast. Podshanking involves using some minor audio recording equipment in order to transfer songs from one iPod to another. Interested?

While this site is mostly for Windows users (because that’s what I use), we’ll have some tips for our Mac friends from time to time. Our first Mac tip comes from our good friend Ryan from New York. Want some cool AppleScripts to control iTunes and your iPod on a Mac? Check out Doug’s AppleScripts site. Pretty useful scripts to do all kinds of neat tricks.
