Deliwin

Even though the world has seen a huge explosion in the number of social bookmarking sites, many of you are probably still using one the first, del.icio.us. I’ve often stated my discontent with how tedious it can be to quickly access bookmarks off del.icio.us sometimes unless you search for the right tools (I like Flock, for example). Deliwin is definitely one of those tools. Simply install this little tool and you’ll see an icon in your system tray which lets you quickly access your bookmarks via tag. Reload times and displayed tags are pretty customizable so you can have some fun trying to get it to conform to your needs. Deliwin is for Windows only, but OSX users can use its parents application, Delibar which has the same features. Both applications are free (donations accepted).

Gmail+Growl

I came across this link on del.icio.us. It’s a gMail notifier through Growl which is another notifying program which you can customize to notify you of any changes in any program your running. Unfortunately we all PC users can’t use this. It’s only for Mac users!!! I don’t have a Mac so I can’t even test out Growl or even Gmail+Growl. Someone test it out and tell me how it is. I’m hearing some rave reviews on it, so give it a try.

Growl is a simple tool that allows applications to send out notifications to your screen. Notifications appear as small windows with a bit of text and an icon. Gmail+Growl works inside of Gmail notifier to send Growl notifications whenever new mail is received.

In the case of Gmail+Growl’s notifications, the icon is that of the sender’s Address Book entry and the text is the subject and an excerpt of the message. However, Growl notifications can look very different depending on which Growl display you use.

I know, I KNOW!!! I’ve been talking about photo online services over and over again. But I am a photographer/graphics designer and I’m always constantly looking for places to store my photos. I’ve been using Parazz for awhile because they upgraded my account for free since I was a beta-tester. They’ve got lots of work to do but overall great service/concept.

They’ve recently rolled out a new feature called the “Parazz Mini Viewer”. It’s actually a small Flash driven photo album that you can post on your own website. I’ve posted mine on my blog. You can go check it out by clicking here. They’ve still got some bugs to work out, such as: none of the photos actually link out to the actual image. This service is a work in progress. Much to improve here but they are heading in a good direction. Check them out at www.parazz.com or stop by my album at www.parazz.com/albums/j5uh.

I personally don’t have a Mac, but I found this program on LifeHacker and it seems like a really neat little program. It’s called the SyncTunes. You can actually sync up Itunes with other mp3 players that aren’t ipods! Also PDAs, phones, and PSPs. I’m not sure how well this software work, but if your a heavy Itunes user this is something you should try. [Thanks to Lifehacker for this great find]

Learn to program in Python

If you’ve wanted to start programming, Python is a rather popular and easy language to learn and use. hose of you who remember when BASIC was king, Python is similar to an updated and more powerful version of BASIC, and there’s many similiarities between the two. (It also happens to be named after British comedians!) For the most part, Python is an interpreted language, meaning that you have to have the Python interpreter to run any Python programs. As a rule of thumb, if a computer can run the Python interpreter, it can run most Python programs. There’s Windows, DOS, Windows CE, Mac, Linux (Check your distribution’s package manager), Java, and many other interesting versions officially avaliable.

There’s also many good Python tutorials avaliable, such as Dive Into Python (for people with prior programming experience), and, for those new to programming or with less experience, The Non-Programmer’s Guide to Python. Happy coding, everyone!

Yojimbo

We’ve written about software that helps you organize information before, whether on the desktop or online, but most only work for certain types of information, such as events, media, etc. If you’re looking for an application which will help you organize nearly any type of media and non-media, then you might want to take a look at Yojimbo, at least if you’re using a Mac. Yojimbo is super simple to use and you can organize anything from PDF files, documents, bookmarks, and notes to reference materials, jokes, serial numbers and passwords. The applications isn’t free ($39 USD), but if you need one a one stop place to organize all your information, Yojimbo is one of the best solutions available today.

Find the most downloaded Konfabulator widgets

Dashboard widgets

So here’s another reason I’m jealous of the Mac…Dashboard. Sure, us Windows users have Konfabulator (or Yahoo! Widgets I guess it’s called now), but there’s nothing like simple operating system integration (which Apple does so well). Still Konfabulator has some excellent features and tons of different freely downloadable widgets, and you can find the most popular ones here.

The list includes close to 500 widgets in all categories ranging from system information via the very useful miniCPU to the somewhat entertaining Hula Girl widget. It was created using Ning, by the way, which makes creating web applications a breeze.

Tickr for Flickr

You know, sometimes I really regret having bought a Dell laptop instead of an iBook simply because of some of the cool software available for the Mac. One such tool is Tickr for Flickr a free application which scrolls your favorite Flickr photos across your Mac desktop. With the latest release, you can customize where to place the scrolling slideshow (left, right, or bottom), as well as how large or small you’d like the slideshow to be. Additionally, you can set transparency levels, search for particular types of photographs, as well as sort them by a few different types of category including date taken, date posted, how interesting the photo is, etc. Tickr for Flickr requires Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later.

Super easy video conversion for iPod w/ iSquint

iSquint

Since the introduction of the video-enabled iPod, we’ve mentioned a few different tools which help you convert videos to a format which your new iPod will recognized. If you found that those tools weren’t quite what you wanted or were maybe too difficult to use, then you should definitely check out iSquint.

Converting videos with iSquint is super easy. Simply drag and drop the video file into the application, and click the Start button, and convert away! The application currently only supports the AVI and MPEG formats, but as these are the most popular formats use, I don’t see that as much of a problem. iSquint is available for Macs only, and completely free.
