Windows Mobile 6.0 Office for Windows Mobile 5

I recently picked up the “Cingular 2125″ Windows Phone. As a previous user of a Pocket PC, I thought it would have similar MS Office file capabilities built in. But I was wrong.

With the new version of Windows Mobile that is now available, they have finally added Office capabilities to the smartphone software, but this hasn’t done much good for those still stuck with Windows Mobile 5. Now someone has pulled the apps from a Windows Mobile 6 and ported them over for 5. I haven’t personally tried this yet, and it is certainly out of the range of what Microsoft would probably reccomend, but it seems like a potentially useful fix. I plan to try it soon, and if any readers have, comment on the success of it.

Microsoft releases Defender

Defender

I wrote about Microsoft AntiSpyware back in May of last year, while the product was still in early beta stages. Since then, Microsoft has changed the name of the application from AntiSpyware to Defender, and after many, many months in closed beta, has finally released it to the public.

Microsoft Defender is a fantastic application and actually works quite well, maybe due in part to the fact that it wasn’t developed entirely in-house, as Defender is the result of Microsoft buying out antispyware company GIANT. Regardless, Defender is quite polished, and for the months that I used the product, I never had to worry about any kind of spyware invading my system. Thanks to its integration with Windows, Defender also blocks popups and keeps you informed of security updates, all for free.

Bypassing Genuine Windows Advantage

Windows Genuine Advantage (or WGA) is a piece of anti-piracy software that Microsoft has started using in their applications and software updates to verify that those who wish to install the software are using legitimate copies and not pirated ones. While this may seem good and dandy, WGA has caused problems even for users who actually bought copies of Microsoft software, so you may find that you need to bypass it. There are some products on which WGA can be bypassed with a piece of software called Orca. Open the installer with Orca, then select CustomAction, then on the CHECK_WGA action, select Drop Row. Next, look for the CheckWGA dialog and change the value from 2 to 0 and save. Now you can run the installer WGA free.

About a month ago, the uTorrent team released the long awaited uTorrent WebUI which allows uTorrent users to check the status of their torrent downloads from any computer. Now, we have the Firefox extension for uTorrent WebUI which lets you sign on to the application via Firefox, and lets you monitor your downloads right from the sidebar. Pretty cool, unfortunately, it seems to be Windows only.

Google Earth/Wikipedia

I’ve expressed my love for Google Earth quite a few times since it’s first appearance, but always wished it provided a little more real-world information out of the box instead of having to add my own data and coordinates. If you’ve ever felt the same, you might be happy to know you can know, thanks to Geocoordinates from Wikipedia for Google Earth, a website which provides a .KMZ file you can open in Google Earth and which provides coordinates for thousands of Wikipedia entries. Due to the number of possible entries, the database is split up into layers so you’re not overwhelmed by onscreen data.

Geocoordinates from Wikipedia for Google Earth is available in both English and German, and is completely free. All you need is a copy of Google Earth to enjoy it.

Jedi Concentrate

While I deeply and truly enjoy sitting in front of my computer to browse the web or some some real work, I wish there were less distractions. I’m not talking about the neighbor’s dog barking, or the wife playing music too loud, but distractions on screen. Jedi Concentrate can help.

Jedi Concentrate is a free Windows application which helps you concentrate on the task at hand by blacking out all inactive windows. This way, if you have a report to write, keep OpenOffice open (or whatever you use) without looking at your latest feed updates. Enjoy!

There are times when working under Windows when you may notice a couple of different errors pertaining to files or resources being in use. You may see it while trying to access new files, or maybe while trying to remove unnecessary applications. If you’ve ever gotten one of these errors, check out Unlocker. Unlocker adds itself as a Windows shell extension so you can right-click a file and select Unlocker to kill the process. It’s all free, and all Windows.

Are you tired of having the same wallpaper on your desktop all the time? Maybe you don’t have time to search for some new ones? Why not let Google do the searching for you!? You can with a little application named Google Wallpaper (and no, it’s not created by Google, but by a programmer with quite a bit of time on his hands). Simply enter a keyword, a search interval, and whether you want to use Safe Search (to filter out any “unwanted” images) and Google Wallpaper will automatically change your wallpaper for you based on that search term. Super cool, and completely free, though unfortunately available for Windows only.

MP3MyMp3

Those of you who’ve been visiting this site for a while, may remember that Mike and I used to do a (mostly) weekly podcast. During that time, I played around with dozens of different audio recording applications, none of which worked as well as my still favorite application, Audacity; however, there is a small application I just discovered which may prove useful not just for podcasting, but for recording streaming internet radio, or even VOIP calls on your machine. The application is MP3MyMP3 Recorder.

The applications is pretty simple to use. Just pick your audio source, and your audio format, and record away. MP3MyMP3 Recorder supports not only MP3 and WAV recording, but also the less popular AIF, SWA, and AU (What!? No OGG!?). Download the application for free, but remember, it’s Windows only.
